WORKING TITLE: Teacher, MS Team Leader GRADE: BD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: The Middle School team leader has the responsibility for coordinating and managing the operations of a grade level team. The Middle School team leader should be an effective facilitator, have strong interpersonal skills and be committed to collaboration with all stakeholders for the benefit of students. The Middle School team leader focuses on coordination of the grade level instructional program and collaboration among teachers across grade level teams. The Middle School team leader analyzes grade level and individual student achievement data to ensure that school improvement targets are being met. The Middle School team leader promotes and facilitates student and parent engagement. The Middle School team leader participates on the Leadership Team to ensure that all school initiatives are implemented. In order to support these additional responsibilities, they are provided with additional time and compensation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of grade level curriculum, assessment and instruction. Demonstrated excellence in teaching. Understanding of the middle school child. Ability to work well with students, teachers, and administrators. Strong skills in data collection and analysis of formative and summative data sources. Strong technology skills. Knowledge of and understanding of master schedule. Knowledge of Baldrige tools and practices. Outstanding facilitation, organizational and management skills. Excellent oral, written communication, facilitation and collaboration skills. This position requires the knowledge and application of the six performance standards that have been established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Holds, from an accredited institution, a master's degree or its equivalent in semester hours of credit or is within one year of fulfilling this requirement. Has had a minimum of three years of outstanding teaching experience, one year of MCPS teaching experience preferred. Experience teaching in middle school. Demonstrates excellent skills in working effectively with people. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.SELECTION AND CONTINUANCE OF SERVICE:Shall be selected by the principal and a team that will include teachers from the grade level team. (When the career lattice is implemented, team leaders will have to achieve lead teacher status).EVALUATION:Will be evaluated using the standards of Teacher Professional Growth System.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets the appropriate Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for a middle school assignment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as a Grade Level Instructional Leader:

Schedules, plans, coordinate and facilitate grade level team meetings. Ensures that notes and information are disseminated to all staff

Collaborates with other MS teacher leaders to facilitates team instructional planning to ensure:
o A balanced and challenging instructional program for all students
o Coordination and timing of assignments to help students succeed
o The development of interdisciplinary connections in thinking and academic skills
o Student engagement in authentic instruction

Serves as a grade level liaison between team and grade-level administrator and collaborates with administrators and colleagues on team, grade level and instructional issues

Provides strategies and implements programs/practices for improving student achievement, classroom organization and management.

Participates in the school leadership team in planning a school-wide instructional and assessment program that provides consistency, continuity, and varied approaches to curriculum implementation appropriate for the strengths and needs of students:
o Ensure grading and reporting procedures determined by the team aligns to the grading and reporting policy
o Assists with hiring new teachers.
o Provides input in the development of the master schedule to meet student needs.

Works with the administration, school finance staff to manage the team budget and with teachers to order and distribute materials if there is a team budget

Promotes Success for Every Student:

Monitors and analyzes individual student and grade level data for instructional implications and student engagement in collaboration with the principal to distinguish between department and team level data responsibilities

Schedules, plans, coordinates and facilitates student/teacher and parent/teacher conferences as needed

Participates in the design, implementation and monitoring of the local school improvement plan with grade level teams

Provides strategies and implements programs and practices for improving student engagement and school climate.

Collaborates with teachers and administrators to communicate student grade information

Collaborates with teachers, counselors and others using multiple data sources to determine best placements for students

Assists in the distribution and collection of magnet and special program applications and recommendations

Collaborates with other teacher leaders and administrators to support articulation within the school and between the elementary feeder and cluster or consortium high schools

Coordinates team efforts to celebrate and recognize student success

Promotes Professionalism and Continuous Professional Development:

Keeps current on instructional best practices, provides modeling and supports classroom teachers in the instructional program

Dialogues with mentors and consulting teachers assigned to teachers regarding student or behavioral concerns

Supports professional development initiatives of the school.
