WORKING TITLE: Teacher, Orthopedic GRADE: AD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Assesses, plans and provides instruction on curriculum outcomes for students with physical disabilities. Consults with team members and parents on strategies and accommodations to access the curriculum and school environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of effective instructional practices and differentiation of instruction.Knowledge of physically disabling conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.Knowledge of assistive devices and accommodations for students with physical disabilities.Knowledge of curriculum based assessment. Ability to administer, accurately interpret and write educational assessment reports. Knowledge of special education law and procedures. Ability to work within a team setting.Ability to use technology to address curricular outcomes and for data management. Small and large group classroom management skills. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in special education from an accredited college or university. Training and/or experience with students with physical disabilities, technology and universal design for learning are desirable.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland State Department of Education requirements for special education teacher.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Determine learning needs of students through observation, administration of appropriate evaluation protocols, curriculum-based assessments, and information provided by parents and team members.

Develops Individualized Education Programs that are related to the MCPS curriculum for students with disabilities.

Provides and evaluates instruction for students.

Selects appropriate teaching techniques, modifying tasks and materials to accommodate individual needs.

Uses assistive technology to teach curricular outcomes and accommodate learning and physical needs.

Implements effective classroom and behavior management strategies.

Utilizes para educators to implement interventions and evaluate their effectiveness.

Collaborates with team members on learning strategies, differentiation and use of equipment and adaptive devices.

Revises IEP objectives as needed, throughout the year, and participates in IEP and parent meetings.

Participates in MCPS training and professional development activities.

Maintains communication with parents on student progress and provides reinforcement activities for home.

Reinforces school rules related to student conduct.

Completes required documentation such as evaluations, quarterly progress codes and IEPs in a timely manner.

Participates in school management.

Attends staff meetings and serves on school committees.

Performs related work as required.
