WORKING TITLE: Teacher, Elementary SLIFE Coach GRADE: AD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the direction of the elementary English Learner and Multilingual Education supervisor, in alignment with priorities from the Department of English Learner and Multilingual Education, the Students with Limited/ Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) Coach will provide professional learning and coaching to build the capacity of general education and ELD staff to support the language and academic content needs of newly arrived elementary level Emergent Multilingual Learner (EML)with limited or no formal education. The SLIFE Coach will support school based staff to promote effective instructional practices in order to bridge language and content and increase student achievement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of second language teaching/learning methods and techniques. Experience analyzing student performance data, providing effective English language development instruction, and using the WIDA English Language Development Resources and other research to inform practice. Demonstrates ability to collaborate with staff and school-based administrators and experience formulating instructional strategies to meet elementary student needs required. Ability to understand and support students in the process of adjustment to the academic and cultural environment in MCPS. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills. Experience teaching ELD, elementary content, Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) preferred. Fluency in another language, in addition to English, preferred.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree or equivalency with courses in ESOL/ELD, specified content area specialization, assessment/evaluation, administration and supervision, professional development, or accelerated and enriched instruction. Five years or more successful experience as a classroom teacher and/or ELD teacher in the specified content. School-based instructional leadership desirable. Successful experience developing and supporting curriculum implementation.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Must hold Maryland teacher certification in ESOL/ELD.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supports staff members to analyze WIDA and other student performance data to differentiate classroom instruction, materials, and resources based on the English language proficiency levels of elementary level students.

Works with professional staff to perform curricular backmapping to identify learning pathways for students and instructional leverage points for teachers.

Facilitates the use of information and resources provided through systemwide ELD training to customize and deliver professional development to elementary school staff members.

Researches and delivers best practices on comprehensible input and scaffolding.

Works with general education teachers to model lessons, observe, coach, co-teach and provide feedback to teachers and support personnel.

Provides resources to help grade-level or course team planning by peer coaching.

Attends and participates in professional development experiences provided by the Department of English Learners and Multilingual Education to ensure alignment of professional learning in schools with priorities from the Department of English Learners and Multilingual Education.

Supports case management team that meets with stakeholders, parents, and support SLIFE End of Year (EOY) and Articulation Meetings.

Collaborates with the staff development teachers and team leaders to provide job-embedded professional development opportunities to improve general educator understanding of meeting the academic language needs of ELs SLIFE students.

Joins forces with the administration to make quality instruction for EL SLIFE students a top priority and support the culture of collaboration and inquiry.

Models the implementation of equitable practices.
