WORKING TITLE: Evening CREA Teacher GRADE: AD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Evening work required. Under direction of the Foundations Supervisor and CREA Program Specialist, and in collaboration with the leadership of all high schools, plans for and provides English language development (ELD) instruction for students who have been identified as eligible for ELD services through the state mandated English language proficiency test. Collaborates with program specialist, counselors, teachers, and other school staff about individual Emergent Multilingual Learner (EML) students and their needs, includes submitting referrals to the CREA counselor and CREA PCC for wraparound support; serves as a resource for information regarding EML students, cultural and linguistic differences, English language development, and the ELD instructional program; serves as a resource to explain the ELD instructional program to parents of EML students; serves as a resource for students, parents, staff, and community, as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of second language teaching/learning methods and techniques. Ability to work effectively with administrators, counselors, and other school staff in organizing and implementing the ELD instructional program. Fluency in another language, in addition to English, preferred. Ability to understand and support students in the process of adjustment to the academic and cultural environment in MCPS. Knowledge of GED indicators and experience teaching adult education classes. Experience with students who have interrupted and/or limited education. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Holds Maryland teacher certification in ESOL/ELD.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Evening work required. Additional flexing of hours may be needed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as liaison between EML students, parents, and schools.

Provides English language development instruction to students enrolled in the ELD program.

Collaborates with appropriate school staff in selecting the ELD Instructional Model and developing a schedule used for implementing the ELD instructional program.

Selects and orders textbooks and instructional materials for use in the ELD classroom, as appropriate.

Participates in appropriate in-service programs or other professional staff development activities.

Participates in EML Team meetings, as well as other meetings essential to supporting students who are EML, such as parent conferences and EMT meetings.

Develops the accommodations documentation (ELD plan) for EML students in collaboration with the EML team.

Administers and scores the state-mandated English language proficiency placement test to determine eligibility for enrollment in the ELD program.

Administers the annual state-mandated English language proficiency assessment.

Maintains EML student files on individual EML students to comply with local, state, and federal accountability requirements.

Collaborates with general educators on strategies to differentiate instruction and effectively engage EML students in the non-ELD classroom.

Collaborates on professional development activities for school staff to support the academic success of EMLs.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
