SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the school principal, plans for and provides appropriate learning experiences in physical education for students with disabilities. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to develop physical and health literacy. Supervises students in movement settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Implements the Adapted Physical Education (APE)/Individualized Education Program (IEP) process through evaluation, delivery of APE services in the least-restrictive environment (LRE), and develops standards-based IEP goals for students receiving APE services. Communicates and interacts effectively with students, parents/guardians, staff members, and community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students to provide access to the physical education curriculum. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) physical education curriculum, special education and the IEP process, MCPS policies, and effective instructional practices to support individuals with a variety of disabilities. Understanding of the teaching/learning process. Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education. Ability to infuse technology into curriculum. Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school-based staff members, students, parents/guardians, and community. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements in appropriate field of education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to move around the classroom including stooping, bending, standing for extended periods, and moving heavy objects.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS. The courses are designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities, particularly courses in behavior management which include non-violent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to physically support behavioral and crisis interventions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the needs, interests, and abilities of individuals to develop physical and health literacy.

On a regular and consistent basis, meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.

Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives in the LRE.

Provides an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, including students with disabilities.

Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.

Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc. to communicate these objectives to students.

Establishes learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, requirements of MCPS curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development.

Plans for and utilizes instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.

Recognizes the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, effectively collaborates with colleagues, central office and school based staff implements the special education IEP process as required. Provides input when necessary to student IEP's.

Implements the APE/IEP process through evaluation, delivery of APE services in the LRE, and develops standards-based IEP goals for students receiving APE services.

Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, Board of Education policies and MCPS regulations.

Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct. Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.

Under reasonable terms, incumbents will be available to students and parents or guardians for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so.

Establishes relationships with colleagues, students, parents/guardians and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.

Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for paraeducators and volunteers. May evaluate paraeducators job performance with department heads and/or administrators.

Appraises his/her own effectiveness and demonstrates successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness.
Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.

Participates in school management and shares responsibility for the total school program.

Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required. Performs related work as required.

Understands and applies the six performance standards established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
