WORKING TITLE: Teacher Resource, Mindfulness Specialist GRADE: AD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the direction of the director of Restorative Justice, the Mindfulness specialist works with administrators and staff of identified schools to develop, implement, monitor and sustain Mindfulness programs. Supports the development of a comprehensive school plan that supports social, emotional, and mental health services to students. Partners with school leaders to pair mindfulness practices with existing programs to increase the capacity of all stakeholders in mindfulness practices. Collaborates with school leadership teams on mindfulness professional development throughout the school year to roll out local initiatives and provide direct services to vulnerable students. Liaises with internal and external partners to ensure students, families, and school communities receive the necessary supports to ensure student social/emotional/mental wellness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to work well with staff and students. Ability and skill to build capacity of staff to analyze student achievement data for instructional decision making. Excellent organizational, oral and written communication and human relations skills. Considerable knowledge of mindfulness instruction with special attention to de-escalation strategies, re-entry into school, student engagement, and behavior management protocols. Ability to gain knowledge of and apply the six performance standards established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS) in performing the duties of the position.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Masters from accredited college or university. Five years or more of successful experience as a classroom teacher. Experience in planning and implementing professional development experiences for school-based staff and making presentations to supervisors. Experience as a member of school planning teams. Experience analyzing and interpreting data. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland state certification requirements. Holds a current Maryland state standard and advanced professional certificate in a teaching area.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Occasional evening work to meet deadlines or to attend Board of Education, committee, PTSA, or other meetings.

Coordinates, identifies, and facilitates mindfulness practices in designated schools.


Develops and facilitates mindfulness professional learning for school-based staff.


Assists with increasing the efficacy and fidelity of Mindful Interventions in schools where there is evidence of disproportionality in suspensions among students with disabilities.


Assists schools with developing materials and programming to for the implementation of mindfulness practices.

Operates, supervises, and monitors the development of student-centered programming in schools and supports to service vulnerable populations including but not limited to students who are: cultural minorities, effected by poverty, LGBTQIA, suffering from trauma, and any other lifestyle insecurities that impede the achievement of graduation requirements.

Coordinates, facilitates and supports school personnel in data collection, assessment, and analysis of formal and informal data points for use in targeting and monitoring the effectiveness of Mindfulness intervention programs.

Continues comprehensive school mindfulness interventions in identified schools by providing training and individualized follow-up support(s) required.

Provides feedback related to mindfulness strategy instruction.

Meets with grade-level teachers and/or departments regarding classroom climate, restorative practices and provides strategies on how to implement mindfulness practices into instruction.

Assists principal and school staff analyzing pertinent data, root cause, and next steps for increasing school-wide mindfulness initiatives.

Works closely with individual and small groups of teachers on the specific action items to plan, implement, and evaluate student achievement as it relates to access to mindful intervention strategies.

Assists local school personnel in utilizing formal and informal data in identifying focus students who would benefit from receiving mindfulness instruction.

Communicates and shares best practices with principals and leadership team.

Understands and applies principles of performance evaluation and professional growth standards for employees.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
