WORKING TITLE: Mental Health Coordinator (10 months) GRADE: BD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision of the Associate Superintendent, Office of Student and Family Support and Engagement, this professional will coordinate mental health services within MCPS and collaborate with the local entities that provide mental health services. They will be responsible for coordinating appropriate mental health supports to students with significant social, emotional and behavioral challenges and their families; and assisting them with academic learning by providing strategic services that identify and address the social-emotional environmental issues that interfere with the educational process.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of MCPS and the local mental health agencies providing services to youth and their families. Excellent clinical knowledge and skill in working with students experiencing significant social, emotional and behavioral issues and their families. Knowledge of effective crisis intervention processes. Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws, policies and regulations related to special education in general and serious emotional disabilities specifically. Be familiar with surface management strategies, as needed. Excellent human relations, oral and written communication skills. Must have the ability to work well in multi-disciplinary teams and to function effectively in multiple environments.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Masters degree in social work, counseling, or school psychology or related field from an accredited college or university. A minimum of five (5) years paid experience in a setting working with students with emotional/behavioral needs. Experience and training which demonstrates successful use of clinical skills in working with such students and/or their families, other programs, and agencies. Or other combination of applicable education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: A valid license issued by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners at the LCSW-C level; or Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists; or credentialed by Maryland State Department of Education as a school psychologist or eligible for credential.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) 20 summer supplement days required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

coordinates existing mental health services and referral procedures for mental health services;

works in collaboration with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and other local providers of mental health services to refer students for treatment;

coordinates with DHHS and other agencies and organizations to identify and advocate for external funding for mental health and wraparound services; and

provides support to schools for coordination and delivery, as appropriate, of behavioral health and wraparound services to students exhibiting behaviors of concern.

Serves on the MCPS crisis team.

Assists in the development and revision of student threat assessment and intervention policies and programs.

Assists with developing standards and procedures for student referral, evaluation, and mental health treatment.

Demonstrates and provide on-site crisis intervention response, interventions and follow-up, as needed.

Develops and provides professional development for school-based and district-wide staff on relevant subject matter.

Attends meetings and professional development activities as required.

Maintains professional boundaries, code of ethics, and confidentiality as well as other duties as assigned.
