SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the Preschool Education Program (PEP) Coordinator, supports the implementation of the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for students and their families in accordance with MCPS Program of Studies. Major responsibilities are to support families/caretakers and staff working with children ages three through five enrolled in the program. Assistance occurs within the classroom setting or through group and individual meetings with parents. Parent Educators plan and conduct parent group seminars, and assist families through intake and exiting process.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of special education programs including federal and state legislation relating to assessment, programming, and services for preschool students with disabilities; ability to understand and relate well to students, their parents/caregivers, and classroom teachers. Excellent human relations and oral and written communication skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in psychology, counseling, social work, education, or related field. Trainingand considerable experience in working with pre-kindergarten students with developmental delays and their families. Experience in education-based setting preferred; or other combinations of applicable education and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Maryland State Department of Education requirements as special education teacher preferred, but not required. Other licenses/certification inappropriate fields are acceptable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Confers with staff around children's and parents' emotional and coping/adapting abilities.

Provides support in the classroom regarding children's social/emotional development.

Provides crisis intervention with children and parents and staff.

Serves as member of the program's School IEP team.

Assists families through the intake and orientation process.

Assists families in the transition to kindergarten process. .

Acts as a representative of the program to the community and other programs.

Designs and conducts parent support groups, training, and seminars.

Designs and conducts in-services for staff and other groups.

Provides consultation and direct support to leadership and teachers in the area of family needs.

Makes oral or written presentations for projects assigned by the leadership.

Promotes good public relations with MCPS staff, parents, public and private organizations, and the general public.

Performs related work as required.
