WORKING TITLE: Application Specialist I, Student System Application/PC GRADE: 23 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under minimal direction, maintains the current Student System Database and associated applications, and is responsible for PC and network hardware and software from the user to the network connection. Duties involve resolution of job trouble reports and applying small to medium mandated enhancements to the existing student applications and maintaining the PC availability for all users in ADIT. The charge of the Student Application/PC Specialist involves analyzing enhancement requests, providing multiple solutions to requests or problems, implementing program changes or developing new programs, developing program test plans, devising sample input data to test the adequacy of a given change and running tests of the application, correcting errors by altering program steps and sequence, changing JCL as needed to achieve desired results, and provide updated documentation to users for student applications and installing PC hardware and software, including network connection, trouble shooting PC and network errors from the user to the network connection for all ADIT staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the Novell network structure and the user's connections needs. Working knowledge of CA-IDMS, CA-ADS/Online, and COBOL. Working knowledge of CA-Culprit, CA-RPF, SAS, and JCL desirable. Ability to develop new programs and modify existing programs which are at a high level of complexity. Ability to develop and implement a test plan. Ability to install and maintain PC hardware and software and various peripherals. Ability to quickly analyze and solve user PC problems. Ability to work independently and cooperatively within a team. Analytical and problem-solving skills. Skill in completing program and system documentation. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent human relations skills. Excellent time management skills. High degree of professionalism which includes attitude, work ethics, taking responsibility, personal incentive, intra-organizational effectiveness, meeting deadlines, flexibility, multi-tasking, and attention to detail. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree required. Training with CA-RPF, CA-CULPRIT, JCL, and SAS desirable. Considerable experience in the maintenance of complex mainframe data processing systems. Experience with COBOL, CA-IDMS, CA-ADS/Online, COBOL IDMS. Considerable experience in installation and troubleshooting of PC hardware and software. At least two years of experience maintaining/developing Student Systems. Experience working with project management tools (such as Microsoft Project for Windows) desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Positions require the operation of workstations for sustained periods of time.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Must pass the competency test assigned to this position class. Ability to work occasional overtime when urgent work requirements exist.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Using appropriate tools to resolve job trouble reports, develops enhancements and mandated changes of moderate scope.

2. Applies and conforms to ADIT standards for this work.

3. Reviews and analyzes problems and requested enhancements/changes.

4. Defines user requirements.

5. Defines multiple solutions to problems or requested enhancements/changes. Implements the selected solution.

6. Uses appropriate tools to make necessary program/JCL changes.

7. Develops test plans and inputs data, as needed, to test the change or enhancement.

8. Analyzes results of tests to evaluate such factors as accuracy and achievement to desired logic and determines effectiveness of change or enhancement.

9. Makes necessary changes to program or system documentation; makes changes production ready.

10. Participates in on-going, self-initiated learning to maintain currency in the field of information technology and shares knowledge both formally and informally with others as appropriate. Installs all PC hardware and software used by ADIT staff.

11. Analyzes and resolves hardware or software problems for the ADIT staff.

12. Performs related work as required.
