WORKING TITLE: Senior Reporting Specialist GRADE: 24 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the supervisor of testing and reporting, is responsible for compiling, verifying, analyzing, synthesizing, and reporting statistical data for MCPS. Work of the senior reporting specialist involves responding to requirements and requests from local, state, and federal institutions, as well as members of the Board of Education and MCPS staff, ad hoc requests, and other educational institutions. The work of this classification requires knowledge of statistics and advanced technical experience writing code and using statistical packages for analyzing large datasets (SPSS, SAS, Stata, etc.) is required. The senior reporting specialist should be adept at performing queries, writing reports, and presenting findings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of database management, record keeping, and reporting procedures. Considerable knowledge of local, state, and federal requirements relating to statistical information about MCPS. Considerable knowledge of computers and the kinds of information stored on and used with them and of student systems applications including Synergy. Thorough knowledge of the school system's organization and where to retrieve needed data. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite, Outlook, Excel, relational databases, and statistical software such as Access, FileMaker Pro, Structured Query Language (SQL) and SPSS. Technical expertise in the areas of information querying. Ability to verify data files with required reporting formats, calculate basic statistics from existing data, determine the best way to present information for the audience or purpose, and interpret available data to identify problems. Ability to understand data specifications and identify potential issues in completing a given specification based on the data in the system. Ability to work independently. Ability to pay attention to detail and produce work requiring a high degree of accuracy. Ability to organize, prioritize and schedule multiple tasks to meet critical deadlines. Skill at proofreading numbers and interpreting tables of figures. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred. Course work in statistics and computer applications. Five plus years' experience in analyzing, collecting, and reporting data using relational databases and statistical software such as Access, FileMaker Pro, SQL, and SPSS; interpreting computer outputs; identifying errors; and solving problems relating to statistical data. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Reviews, verifies, and processes reports prepared in other MCPS offices that are required by local, state, and federal agencies such as the Maryland State Department of Education, U.S. Office of Education, and Montgomery County Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

2. Develops report formats and specifications to provide special historical and/or current data in a readily accessible form for staff members, outside agencies, and the general public. This requires being a liaison with the technology team on the design and development of data processing applications intended to supply data to meet reporting requirements. This involves monitoring local, state, and federal changes in the data collected and/or the way it is reported.

3. Compiles, verifies, and synthesizes data for and transmits a number of time sensitive reports during the year, including enrollment, suspension, and class size reports that are initially generated from reporting tools such as data warehouse.

4. Responds to all data inquiries to verify and/or obtain district and school statistical data and acts as a source of information and assistance to staff throughout MCPS.

5. Meets with and trains school-based record keepers on state and federal requirements for maintaining records on student performance, attendance, and discipline.

6. Reviews latest technology to keep up with the changing needs of maintaining, analyzing, and presenting statistical data (i.e., computer hardware and software).

7. Performs related work as required.
