WORKING TITLE: Security Team Leader GRADE: 16 MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION; PHYSICAL DEMANDS; AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Summary Description: A position in this classification is assigned to the high school to assist the administration in maintaining a safe and secure learning atmosphere for staff and students. Major job responsibilities include supervision and leadership of the security team and investigation of criminal incidents on school property. Under supervision of the principal or designee, assists in controlling access to buildings and grounds by unauthorized persons, and in assuring that students report to their assigned instructional areas. Physical Demands: Ability to intervene in fights and to apprehend and detain persons. Ability to spend long periods of timewalking and standing and to complete security patrol duties. Ability to patrol outdoors in inclement andextreme weather conditions. Special Requirements: Required to work flexible hours, including weekends, as assigned by the principal to provide maximum security coverage. Required to occasionally work overtime. Required to wear the designated security uniform.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES: Knowledge of procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others. Knowledge of behavior management techniques. Demonstrated knowledge of investigative and security procedures. Must know, or have the ability to rapidly acquire specific knowledge of school and MCPS policies and procedures on student attendance, suspension, student involvement, and standards of student behavior. Excellent ability to communicate effectively with students and staff, including ability to gain the cooperation and support of others to achieve desired results. Ability to understand the role of each staff member having responsibility for student attendance, behavior, and building security. Ability to work harmoniously with staff and students and to perform assigned tasks under general supervision. Ability to complete investigatory and other reports and maintain security and related records. Excellent oral communication and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Education Training Experience:Associates degree required. Bachelors degree preferred. College course work in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields. Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment. Experience in investigation and safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer. Experience in supervising staff. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:First aid and CPR certification. Certification by the Maryland Police Training Commission desirable.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Example Duties:Investigates all criminal incidents on school property and prepares a written report for the principal^s action. Advises the principal on all school security-related matters such as handling money, fire hazards, etc. Maintains a high profile to discourage disruptive acts. Covers evening and weekend school activities. Provides surveillance of suspected problem areas. Provides day-to-day supervision and leadership of the security assistant(s) and provides guidance assistance to them in the more difficult situations. Provides training for all security team members. Assists the administration with staff and student security awareness programs. Patrols school building and grounds. Acts as a liaison between the administration and emergency service agencies. Represents the school in criminal court cases. Patrols the local school community. Assists feeder schools with security problems. Registers vehicles and assigns parking permits. Operates security equipment such as two-way radio, metal detector, etc. Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
