WORKING TITLE: IT Systems specialist, LAN/WAN Specialist GRADE: 18-25 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the direction of the Supervisor of Telecommunications and Network Security, is responsible for independent work supporting a large LAN/WAN network and providing guidance to technical support personnel engaged in a wide variety of technical support activities such as the design, installation, testing, modification, enhancement, and maintenance of a local and/or wide area computer network; and performs related work as assigned. Areas of expertise include LAN/WAN router configuration, firewall configuration, wireless network management, and VoIP configuration and management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of practices related to managing and trouble-shooting a complex network infrastructure in a large WAN environment with expertise in Cisco routers, switches, wireless networking, firewalls, VPN's, and VoIP telephony systems. A high degree of competency in the following technical areas is required: network protocols, BGP, EIGRP, IPSec, NAT/PAT, QoS, Multicast, STP, 10GigE, GigE, exceptional project management skills and ability to manage time and complex tasks; a solid understanding of Cisco encryption, VPN technologies, and Cisco Unified Communication Manager. In addition, must have thorough understanding of dynamic routing protocols, specifically IPSec and DMVPN; strong critical thinking and analytical skills; strong knowledge of Cisco portfolio of routers, switches, and gateway products. Ability to work in a collaborative, innovative, flexible and team-oriented environment. Ability to effectively lead work teams and facilitate process design sessions. Ability to determine priorities, allocate resources, manage projects, measure and analyze results. Flexibility, adaptability and the ability to learn quickly in various technical and creative environments, while delivering quality work on tight deadlines. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to build productive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders both internally and externally. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor¿s degree required. College course work in networking, LAN/WAN, computer programming, or related computer science coursework. Three to five years of progressively more responsible experience in managing and trouble-shooting a complex network infrastructure in WAN environment and administration. Other combinations of applicable education, and training, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or above preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Night or weekend work may be required on rare occasions

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs all tasks associated with the IT systems support specialist.

2. Provides technical support for an assigned program.

3. May supervise technical aspects of work.

4. May provide technical support for enterprise system projects.

5. Assists with the management and maintenance of all software and hardware systems required to carry out the implementation assigned.

6. Prioritizes, schedules, and allocates technology support resources for the implementation assigned.

7. Provides support for instructional and administrative computer technology and resolves technical support issues that may interrupt the delivery of instruction and administrative services.

8. Diagnoses and assists in the resolution of complex issues related to infrastructure, servers, VoIP, wireless infrastructure, and local and wide area networks.

9. Provides orientation, mentoring, training, and staff development for staff.

10. Serves on cross-functional teams, as assigned.

11. Participate in planning of state-of-the-art technology developments.

12. Creates long-range plans for the adoption of new technologies.

13. Participates in the design of enterprise-wide infrastructure.

15. Provides and recommends specific technology solutions based on user requirements.

16. Obtains quotes on hardware and software based on design specifications.

17. Prepares and conducts technical review of various projects and/or specific incidents.

18. Reviews hardware and/or software specifications from different departments and analyzes and reports on configuration issues.

19. Attends meetings to discuss technical requirements.

20. Ensures collaboration with other technology teams.

21. Monitors network management and performance software and applications.

22. Performs related duties as assigned.
