SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the director of the Equity Initiatives Unit, supports and collaborates with the equity team in providing coaching, professional development, and technical support to central office staff, school site administrators, teachers and support professionals in addressing identified equity challenges with the commitment to closing opportunity gaps that are manifested in the achievement gap. Engages school staff in a process leading to improved outcomes for traditionally underserved students, and facilitates job-embedded staff development to support the elimination of the racial achievement gap. Fosters development and growth of professional learning communities (PLCs). In collaboration with all stakeholders, supports the goal of building staff capacity to meet system-wide initiatives that support increased student learning with a commitment to social justice, equity and practices that lead to transformational outcome for students and staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of current research on racial equity/social justice, theory, coaching, and best practices for providing equitable educational programming leading to closing existing achievement gaps. Knowledge of change process and reform efforts at national, state, and local levels. Knowledge and experience in providing professional development or coaching in the areas of equity, multicultural education and ability to address how race, class, sex, and other forms of bias impact schools and the achievement and experience of students. Ability to seek multiple perspectives, engage in research, facilitate difficult conversations. Ability to read and analyze student achievement data with a focus in identifying patterns with an equity focus. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with educational leaders and diverse members of the school community. Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and tasks. Excellent presentation, interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written) required for preparation of training materials and related documents. Ability to apply technology to design and deliver equity training and development. Ability to collaborate with various MCPS offices to support the mission and vision of MCPS. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Outstanding organizational and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree required. College course work in education, human resources, psychology, social work or business preferred, plus five years of progressively more responsible successful work experience in teaching, counseling, and/or project management required. Demonstrated skills in group facilitation, coaching, and trainings to teachers, administrators, and support professionals. Proven experience infusing multiple perspectives into school improvement and the link to staff development. Experience analyzing training needs, data analysis, designing research-based staff development, implementing high-quality training, and assessing the levels of effectiveness of staff development. Coursework and/or experience in multicultural education, social justice, facilitation, conflict resolution, or racial equity training desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to a bachelor¿s degree, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborates with OCIP and OSSI to plan training and support to schools and offices focused on closing the racial achievement gap.

Collaborates with MCPS leadership in identifying strategies designed to foster an inclusive workforce to help staff, students, parents, and the community at large reflect and relate to a diversity of backgrounds and cultures.

Provides equity coaching, facilitates trainings, Study Circles to staff development teachers, principals, supporting services professionals and central services staff in order to identify and address achievement/performance gaps in schools and offices.

Collaborates with leadership to develop programs, conduct training sessions, start dialogues and come up with creative ways to engage staff about diversity related issues.

Ongoing and active participation in workshops, conferences, and other professional development opportunities related to diversity an multicultural education.

Participates in the planning, design, and implementation of equity training, support, and development programs.

Serves as a member of cross-functional design teams to provide training for the rollout of system-wide training and initiatives focused on the elimination of the achievement gap and supporting staff to implement the equity criterion in all Professional Growth Systems.

Collaborate with Equity initiatives team in providing direct support to schools and offices within MCPS designed to supplement classroom experiences and provide guidance in developing activities for learning communities focused on multiculturalism and diversity.

Coordinates the development, implementation and scheduling of professional development training and support.

Represents the department and its programs on a variety of standing committees and councils with the school system and with a number of outside agencies and institutions for the facilitation of diversity and inclusion workshops as requested.

Represents department and division with universities and professional organizations in addressing and promoting dialogue and aids to facilitate interaction among groups that represent diversity on campus or within the organization.

Performs related duties as assigned.
