WORKING TITLE: IT Systems Engineer, Data Cabling Engineer GRADE: 27 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Provides expert-level support for system-wide technology programs; assists with the design, implementation, maintenance, and day-to-day operations of enterprise-wide infrastructure; performs project management as the lead technical expert for a specific program area; and performs related duties, as required or assigned. Supervision Received/Given-Receives general supervision from a manager or coordinator. Oversees the work of IT systems specialists and other technical staff, as assigned. May provide guidance and assistance to vendors and/or full-, part-time, and/or hourly employees, as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: A solid understanding of Local Area and Wide Area Network design, including expertise in Wiring and Wireless standards, and Building Electrical and Cabling Codes and requirements. Must be able to read architectural drawings and be able to discuss technical indoor and outdoor cabling and electrical plant concepts and requirements with architects, vendors, and contractors. Considerable knowledge of practices related to managing and trouble-shooting a complex network infrastructure in a large WAN environment with expertise in Cisco routers, switches, Ethernet and Fiber Optic design, and design of Wireless infrastructures. Strong critical thinking and analytical skills for troubleshooting network connectivity. Strong knowledge of Cisco portfolio of routers, switches, and wireless products. Ability to work in a collaborative, innovative, flexible and team-oriented environment. Ability to determine priorities, allocate resources, manage projects, measure and analyze results. Flexibility, adaptability and the ability to learn quickly in various technical and creative environments, while delivering quality work by tight deadlines. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to build productive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders both internally and externally. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree preferred. College course work or certifications in computer and electrical engineering related fields. Five to eight years of progressively more responsible experience in managing and trouble-shooting a complex network infrastructure in WAN environment and administration. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to managing and trouble-shooting complex networks, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Microsoft Certified Architect Program preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Considerable local travel to MCPS remote sites.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs all tasks associated with the IT systems support specialist.
2. Provides technical leadership for an assigned program.
3. May supervise technical aspects of work.
4. May act as a project lead performing project management duties.
5. Assists with the management and maintenance of all software and hardware systems required to carry out the program assigned.
6. Prioritizes, schedules, and allocates technology support resources for the program assigned.
7. Provides support for instructional and administrative computer technology and resolves technical support issues that may interrupt the delivery of instruction and administrative services.
8. Diagnoses and assists in the resolution of complex issues related to infrastructure, servers, and local and wide area networks.
9. Participates in the hiring process.
10. Provides orientation, mentoring, training, and staff development for staff.
11. Provides input into the evaluations of designated technical staff.
12. Serves on cross-functional teams, as assigned.
13. Plans state-of-the-art technology developments.
14. Creates long-range plans for the adoption of new technologies.
15. Participates in the design of enterprise-wide infrastructure.
16. Designs and recommends specific technology solutions based on user requirements.
17. Obtains quotes on hardware and software based on design specifications.
18. Leads research and development related to an assigned system-wide program.
19. Prepares and conducts technical review of various projects and/or specific incidents.
20. Reviews hardware and/or software specifications from different departments and analyzes and reports on configuration issues.
21. Attends meetings to discuss technical requirements.
22. May participate in the evaluation of staff.
23. Works closely with program managers, coordinators, and directors as a technical expert.
24. Ensures collaboration with other technology teams.
