SUMMARY DESCRIPTION; PHYSICAL DEMANDS; AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the director, Department of Editorial, Graphics & Publishing Services (EGPS), the Communications Specialist II, EGPS position actively supports the long-term goals of MCPS related to pursuing excellence through clear and culturally responsive publishing. Applies skill and artistic judgment in writing, editing, and composing content focused on engaging staff and improving outreach to EGPS customers. Independently plans and leads events and the development, publication and/or dissemination of materials, such as, the district’s editorial correspondence guide for school and office staff, the cross-functional toolkit guide for schools, training materials, newsletters, and website content development. Work includes establishing and maintaining relationships with MCPS offices; serving as the subject matter expert pertaining to editorial best practices; and continually pursuing emerging technologies, trends and methods, relative communications design in the public education space. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: None SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to travel locally on short notice to MCPS schools and offices. Must be able to pursue core competencies within a physically active, loud, industrial production environment. May be required to occasionally work outside of normal business hours.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES:Full professional proficiency in English. Excellent public relations, interpersonal, human relations, oral and written communication skills required. Knowledge of and ability to maintain collaborative relationships within the MCPS community, including all central offices, leadership, and other stakeholders. Ability to work and plan both independently and collaboratively while completing assignments in a timely and efficient manner. Knowledge of publication design, editing, and production. Knowledge of and ability to use website content management system, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Skilled at handling multiple projects and reacting quickly to colleague needs. Ability to develop guides, graphic materials, and communication tools that enable a clear and consistent messaging to various stakeholder groups.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:Bachelor's degree required, with preference given to strategic communications, journalism, and graphic communications. Master's degree preferred. Minimum of six years of experience in communications or related field. Successful experience writing and editing in the broad education industry. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.Certificate/License: None

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Not all duties assigned are included, nor are all duties listed performed in every office or every day.)1.Works daily with Division of Communications staff and leadership to ensure consistent branding and messaging districtwide.2.Proactively conducts research to maintain current knowledge of best practices in writing, general editorial practices and website design and content.3.Leads the development and production of visual and type content for the EGPS website.4.Publishes the annual Toolkit for Schools; the cross-functional resource for office staff.5.Publishes the daily EGPS News, distributed digitally to all EGPS staff, DMM leadership team, and Division of Communications leadership.6.Facilitates formal training of office staff groups regarding correspondence, grammar, document formatting, and best practices for MCPS written materials.7.Write and compose editorial resources for MCPS, including the districtwide editorial handbook, correspondence manual, and acronyms guide.8.Creates the agenda and leads all aspects associated with the biennial Editorial Summit event for school and central office staff.9.Serves the district as the subject matter expert, responding to inquiries and requests for guidance in editorial-related matters.10.Performs related work as required.
