EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Not all duties assigned are included, nor are all duties listed performed in every office.)Reviews architects' and electrical engineers' construction plans and specifications of new schools, additions, and projects to ensure that correct electrical equipment is specified for efficient and economical service; ensures that all equipment, piping, and systems are designed for minimum maintenance, future expansion or additions, and is in conformance with applicable federal, state, local, and life safety construction codes and MCPS standards.Confers with architects, engineers, and contractors of completed schools, additions, modernizations, or other projects to resolve and troubleshoot system and/or equipment problems; develops alternative designs, plans, and specifications as appropriate.Observes, tests, and evaluates completed jobs to ensure that all electrical components are operating properly and meet environmental and safety standards for building occupancy.Evaluates electrical designs submitted by contractors and makes recommendations for improvements and changes; promotes the use of energy efficient equipment and systems.Manages designated capital improvement projects from pre-design through construction; reviews plans and specifications submitted by contractors for conformance to MCPS standards; attends meetings and works with architects, engineers, communities, school staff, and other interested parties to resolve problems, facilitate communication, and provide information; prepares and coordinates request for proposals and bid packages as required; reviews budgets and approves invoices for payments; negotiates contracts; attends progress and other project meetings as required; reviews schedules for completion and monitors work progress to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner.Meets with clients to determine project scope for in-house electrical system projects; prepares drawings and specifications; oversees and coordinates project implementation.Coordinates special programs relating to updating electrical systems and/or improving efficiency (e.g. FACE); serves as MCPS agency contact person and handles administrative details for program implementation. Investigates and resolves electrical system malfunctions; provides expert technical advice regarding electrical systems/components to school system staff, contractors, etc.Prepares and maintains MCPS electrical system guidelines and standards for contractors.Coordinates with other Electrical engineers in the city, county, and state systems on MCPS matters.Knowledge of and ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
