WORKING TITLE: Program Technician, Safety Program GRADE: 17 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs specialized and responsible work involving system wide safety programs and initiatives to promote safe work practices and safe learning and working environments for schools and offices for the director, System wide Safety Programs Unit. Must be able to research, investigate or analyze, and perform data analysis on system wide safety program data from multiple sources that involves sensitive and confidential material. Exercises considerable initiative by gathering information, assembling information for reports, training packets, matrixes. , tracking accident/injury events or situations and keeping the director, System wide Safety Programs informed. The work requires an extensive understanding of federal, state, and local safety and health regulations, school system policies and procedures. Enters data into and extracts data from databases and prepares reports, letters, memos, training packets, charts, PowerPoint presentations for the director. Uses software such as Filemaker PRO, Microsoft Office, Excel and Access spreadsheets, PowerPoint, web-design software etc. Duties include first-line response to safety issues and concerns, and assist the director, System wide Safety Programs, with implementation of MCPS safety program and strategies to meet program goals. Responsible for interacting with all aspects of the school community and school system.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of business english, spelling, general vocabulary, office procedures and equipment; Knowledge of the general organization and functions of Montgomery County Public Schools departments/units. Highly organized with an ability to independently carry out continuing assignments requiring the organization of materials, the handling of routine administrative details, the preparation of safety reports and sound decision-making. Ability to keep complex records, assemble and organize data and to prepare reports from such records; ability to compose memoranda and letters from general instructions; ability to carry out continuing assignments on own initiative; ability to take notes for group meetings may be required for some positions. Ability to work with other county agencies. Ability to use standard office productivity computer programs. Ability to evaluate in-coming emergency data concerning accidents or incidents on students and employees to react effectively and to determine next step. Ability to perform under pressure to meet deadlines and to respond to schools/facilities, as required. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Associates degree required. Bachelors degree preferred. Collegge course work in business administration, business english, editing, proofreading, etc. Experience with mandated federal, state, and county safety and health regulations working with safety issues in a large organization. Demonstrated editing experience and thorough familiarity with MCPS correspondence standards and business English, including strong spelling and grammar skills. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to operate computer terminal for long periods of time and occasionally climb to multiple floors and exterior of school buildings/grounds.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides primary program support to the director, system-wide safety programs.
2. Provides background research, and data analysis at the director's request.
3. Responds to schools and to telephone calls from parents, schools, other MCPS staff, and others concerning safety issues and any emergencies.
4. Attends meetings; sets up and maintains unit files; researches and compiles information for reports and other purposes; prepares program materials and conducts process improvement activities for the safety program.
5. Maintains data about student and employee incidents/accidents.
6. Assists in unit management operations; has understanding and compliance of established policies and guides.
7. Performs administrative task and support to the director, System wide Safety Programs.
8. Develops and maintains electronic data files of documents following established procedures for creating a complex file management system files.
9. Answers inquiries regarding system-wide safety programs and services, explaining requirements and assisting callers; maintains unit records for system-wide safety program and processes, actions, databases, and System wide Safety Programs Unit website etc.
10. Performs related work as required.
