WORKING TITLE: Building Automation Systems Specialist GRADE: 20 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs technical energy audits and control work. Work of the class involves maintaining and operating automated energy monitoring and control system for controlling heating and cooling of schools and other facilities. Employee monitors operation of system and makes changes and corrections as necessary to maintain desired levels by programming the automated equipment. Employee may also conducts energy audits land surveys of buildings and develops procedures for improving energy management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of HVAC systems and controls. Knowledge of energy management computeroperation and programming. Some knowledge of energy conservation techniques and practices withspecific application to schools and large buildings. Ability to analyze and document the effects of systems and operational changes on utility consumption. Ability to carry out established energy conservation practices and procedures. Ability to effectively interface with employees, contractors, utility company representatives and others. Ability to resolve computer-related problems and provide assistance on plant operation problems. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. Coursework or training in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems and controls (HVAC), and computer programming as it relates to energy management systems. Experience in the use of electronics, combustion and HVAC systems testing equipment desirable. Experience in operating and repairing HVAC systems and controls, and experience in computer programming, as it relates to energy management systems. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland driver's license (Class D).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to carry up to 50 lbs, will have to climb ladders and work on roofs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) None

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates the energy management computer to monitor correct operation and data output; observes school electrical loads; activates or deactivates heating, ventilating, air conditioning and lighting systems and equipment in accordance with energy management procedures; tests integrity of communications between the computer and schools; and calls up data as needed.

Diagnoses and repairs/replaces control systems.

Interprets instructions, drawings, and specifications.

Tests and calibrates equipment and energy management systems.

Performs preventive maintenance (PM) on equipment.

Understands and uses tools, instruments and devices properly.

Possesses basic computer user knowledge, including MS office software.

Describes technical problems to supervisor and others for appropriate action.

Exchanges information with customers & staff.

Evaluates procedures and considers impact of actions.

Proposes changes to prevent problems.

Evaluates procedures and considers impact of actions; proposes new procedures.


Changes the schedule for individual school activities, and creates monitor schedules for seasonal changes.

Participates in surveying schools for connection to the energy management computer; reviews construction drawing and specifications, controls drawing and sequences, assigns preliminary control box number and device relay numbers to HVAC equipment (boilers, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, air handling units, fan coil units, unit ventilators, exhaust fans, the contractor on the methods of control and connection, and inspects the contractors' work in progress and upon completion as assigned.

Completes on own or participates in the completion of energy audits to determine energy management actions required; monitors energy management programs in effect at schools and other buildings; analyzes and documents the effects of system and operational changes on utility consumption; carries out designated system operational changes in facilities to achieve energy conservation.

Responds to computer-related problems, calls for assistance on plant operation problems, and calls on energy conservation enforcement.

Recommends steps to be taken to conserve energy consumption.

Performs related work as required.
