WORKING TITLE: Electronics Graphics Artist GRADE: 20 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs specialized work involving the design and production of printed and other visual materials for instruction, public presentation, and administrative use. Exercises considerable artistic creativity, personal judgment, and initiative in creating, illustrating, and preparing materials for printing. Manages a Novell network, and maintains publication projects through archiving and deleting files. Installs and maintains software on Macintosh computers, and troubleshoots hardware and software problems. Trains publications staff in software use and in the operation of Macintosh computers and peripheral devices. Functions as artistic coordinator to staff production artists. Advises MCPS employees on the development and presentation of visual material. Keeps current with technological advancements in the field of graphic design.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the principles of design, and the processes, techniques, materials, and equipment involved in the production and presentation of visual materials of instructional, publication, and conference use. Specifically, graphic design using electronic publishing equipment and software, including both Macintosh and MS-DOS platforms. Thorough knowledge of Novell network management and related hardware and software. Thorough knowledge of MCPS publications standards, quality control requirements, and department organization. Considerable knowledge of proper language usage, editing, and proofreading techniques. Skill in design techniques using both electronic and traditional methods and equipment. Skill in the use of drafting tools and equipment, illustration and hand-lettering media, 33-mm photography and black-and-white darkroom equipment, vertical camera and diffusion transfer print processor. Ability to promote effective communication of ideas and information through graphic/visual solutions, taking into consideration subject material, environment, audience, priority, and budget. Specifically, the ability to review, select, organize, edit, and proofread written and graphic material to maximize clarity, consistency, and effectiveness, express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, perform calculations necessary to determine spatial relationships of typographic and illustrative elements, fit copy and prepare printing specifications, analyze statistical data and convert it into appropriate visual forms, create and/or select appropriate illustrations to enhance the effectiveness of visual materials. Ability to devise, organize, and maintain computer file archiving systems and manage a computer network. Ability to operate and troubleshoot hardware and software problems. Ability to advise staff members on the development of instructional and promotional materials. Knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree required. College major in graphic art or related field. Considerable experience in the creation and production of a variety of visual materials via electronic publishing techniques. Considerable experience using the following categories of computer software: page layout, network management, drawing, image editing, charting/graphing, word processing. Experience in 35-mm still photography and darkroom work. Experience creating, illustrating, and preparing materials for printing. Experience managing a Novell network, and maintaining publication projects Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: None
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to operate a computer terminal for long periods of time. Ability to move heavy cartons of chemicals for image setter and dark room processing.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Some overtime or night work.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Designs visual materials and publications.

2. Independently selects and applies the best treatment for material submitted for public presentation, taking into consideration the intended audience, priority, and costs of appropriate formats and methods of production.

3. Functions as artistic coordinator to staff production artists.

4. Critiques the work of other publications staff members.

5. Works with MCPS staff to refine and prioritize information, determine the target audience, and appropriate format.

6. Designs publications using electronic publishing equipment and software by organizing, creating, and manipulating graphic elements (text, headlines, photos, logos, and illustrations) into an attractive and readable format.

7. Organizes copy for effectiveness, impact, and economy, editing for style, grammar, and consistency and preparing it for transfer into page layout software.

8. Uses various software packages to manipulate sizes, typestyles, and arrangements of the original wording.

9. Selects photos and/or draws or selects appropriate illustrations.

10. Uses a scanner and related software to import illustrations or photos for electronic manipulation, or prepares photos for printing by cropping and specifying percentages of enlargement or reduction.

11. Prepares the publication for printing by producing camera-ready art.

12. Advises administrative personnel in the development and presentation of visual materials.

13. Attends workshops and exhibitions and keeps current on new techniques and equipment in the graphic design and computer field.

14. Manages Novell network.

15. Devises procedures and maintains a system for archiving and deleting publications.

16. Establishing and maintaining archived files.17. Installs and maintains software, trains staff, troubleshoots problems.

18. Loads electronic publishing software and troubleshoots problems.

19. Works with outside equipment technicians in equipment repair.

20. Performs related work as required.
