WORKING TITLE: Parent Community Coordinator, Community Schools GRADE: 17 MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the Community School Coordinator in collaboration with the school principal, provides support work to serve parents and the school community and enhance family engagement. Collaborates with the Community School Liaison in determining and planning, recommending/referring, and implementing wrap around services. Collaborates with parents and family members to advocate for and include in home-school engagement events and opportunities. Implements strategies to support the school community¿s needs that can be met using school and/or community resources. Identifies and develops available resources for supporting school programs and opportunities and works to make them readily available for families. Serves as liaison between the parents and families and the school and community. Assists parents and families in connecting with and utilizing available community and county services as well as school specific programming and resources. Establishes and maintains a school-community relationship, and performs related work requiring the ability to work effectively with parents, community members, school staff, and others. This is a multi-position classification, and, while the level of assigned work is very similar, duties and responsibilities may vary somewhat from school to school based upon individualized school community needs and programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of school programs, the school community and organizations, and available community services and resources in Montgomery County. Ability to work effectively with school staff, parents, the community, local organizations, and diverse socioeconomic groups. Ability to develop and implement programs to involve parents and the community in school affairs. Ability to serve as a parent advocate. Skill in organizing and working with groups. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Fluency in a second language is preferred for some positions. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree required. Coursework in education, counseling, human services field, or communications is desirable. Experience with school and community activities and programs, preferably in a leadership role. Some counseling experience is desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Some evening and occasional weekend work may be required. Flexible schedule is available.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Under direction of the Community School Coordinator in collaboration with the principal and community school liaison, initiates, plans, develops, recommends and implements a variety of programs to involve parents and the community in school affairs, such as school-wide events, parent trainings and workshops, after-school activities, volunteer opportunities, and more.

2. Identifies both community and school resources and opportunities and recommends action steps for how they can be used to meet the school community¿s needs.

3. Organizes and coordinates school resources for distributions and donations such as clothing, food, school supplies, and more.

4. Explores and develops community and other resources for supporting school activities such as volunteer drives, guest speakers, and business assistance.

5. Organizes and coordinates a volunteer unit.

6. May research and write grant proposals for funding special projects.

7. Serves as a liaison for parents and school staff.

8. Develops after school training programs and workshops for parents.

9. Serves as parent and child advocate.

10. Assists parents in such matters as procedures for exploring special school programs for their children, understanding MCPS policies and procedures, appeal rights, availability of community programs and assistance, and parent participation in student and school activities.

11. Meets with parents at school and in the community to discuss school-related problems or needs and recommend solutions/actions.

12. Coordinates publication of parent newsletters and other communicative information.

13. Plans and may coordinate a variety of parent meetings, food pantry/market events and family activities such as book fairs, back to school night, family storytelling workshops, etc.

14. Provides information in multiple languages and formats to ensure all families have access to home-school communication.

15. Performs related work as assigned.
