Media Assistant

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the general supervision of the media specialist, the media assistant, a member of the media center team, provides students and staff with information about and instructional assistance in the use of current research technology, Internet, on-line services, CD-ROM, and traditional library materials and manages the school-wide library media computerized patron and material records systems. The media assistant performs the daily routine operations of the media center; is knowledgeable of instructional audio-visual equipment, and participates in a wide variety of school media center activities. Media assistants may give work direction to student aides and parent volunteers and help in the orientation and training of new media assistants. Work involves performing media center duties and requires considerable technical skill, the ability to learn independently, when necessary, new software in the media center hubs, and the ability to communicate this knowledge to students and staff. Employees in the class are required to learn media center procedures, to be detail-oriented, and to assume responsibility for the routine operations of the media center.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of computer research tools including the Internet, on-line resources, and CD-ROMs. Ability to adapt to new technologies. Ability to become proficient with computer applications (word processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphic presentation programs, e-mail, and on-line ordering) and the ability to impart this knowledge to students and staff effectively. Ability to operate and provide problem-solving for a variety of computers, printers, copiers, and audiovisual equipment or the ability to acquire such skills. Knowledge of library media center procedures, methods, terminology, routines and techniques. Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks in an environment of frequent interruptions. Ability to assist staff and students in locating appropriate materials. Knowledge of off-air recording and copyright guidelines. Excellent human relations and communication skills. Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases, and familiarity with Internet search strategies. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. or Completion of 30 semester hours of college course work and/or one year of experience working with children in instructional situations required if no associates degree. Experience in using computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail, and Internet. Experience working or volunteering in a library environment preferred. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to an Associates degree, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to lift and move books, audiovisual equipment, and other equipment and or objects weighing 25-30 lbs. Physical demands include stooping, bending, and standing for extended periods of time. Position requires occasional operation of keyboard devices for extended periods of time.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) MCPS typing test required with the minimum required score achieved.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assists students in use of print, nonprint, and equipment resources in library media center.

2. Performs bibliographic searches and prepares special collections of appropriate materials.

3. Provides follow-up reinforcement to media specialist's instruction and support to individual students and groups of students in information retrieval techniques.

4. May assist in instruction for using information technologies.

5. May be asked to provide input on short and long range plans for keeping the resources collection and network technology current and assists in evaluating new software for appropriateness and ease of use.

6. Uses library software system to upload/download data, to circulate materials and equipment, to maintain circulation files, to inventory the collection and to reconcile discrepancies, to print reports, including usage, fines, and overdues as needed, and to enter bibliographic data into MCPS online unified holdings catalog.

7. Assists media specialist in explaining proper media center procedures and proper behavior within the center.

8. Supervises routine activities in the media center when the media specialist is not present. Supervises students in the media center.

9. Prepares requisitions for materials and supplies and orders materials using the online Materials Management System.

10. Receives, inspects, and verifies invoices of materials upon delivery and provides for proper inventory records and distribution of those materials.

11. May maintain accounting records for media center accounts, including warehouse and vendor orders. Orders periodicals and warehouse supplies online.

12. Processes new materials, inspects, mends, and shelves materials, prepares materials for the bindery; maintains clipping, pamphlet, and other special files.

13. Sorts mail and vendor catalogs, maintains periodical accession records and claims, prepares routine correspondence, prepares media center announcements, gathers data for and helps produce periodic reports, coordinates and fills requests from other media centers, coordinates interlibrary loan requests.

14. Creates and maintains various databases.

15. Coordinates and tracks Video Library utilization.

16. May assist in television production activities.

17. May provide assistance to students and staff in the preparation of multimedia and graphic presentations such as audio/video tapes, slides, charts, and transparencies.

18. May set up and operate instructional equipment systems for classroom activities or special assemblies to include audio/video recorders, monitors, projectors, PA systems, cameras, etc.

19. May record off-air television productions and maintain log for copyright verification.

20. May maintain an inventory of and documentation for computer software, software licenses, computer-related equipment, and audiovisual equipment.

21. May maintain equipment such as copiers, laminators, portable barcode readers, Scantrons, and diecutters.

22. May assist with staff in-service training.

23. Participates in planning and organizing project exhibits, book fairs, and other displays in the media center.

24. Performs related work as required.
