WORKING TITLE: Graphics Designer I, EGPS GRADE: 18 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION; PHYSICAL DEMANDS; AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Summary Description: Under direction creates original layouts for new projects and makes modifications and/or improvements to existing design layouts of instructional and communication arts materials required by MCPS. Exercises considerable personal artistic creativity in meeting the customer project requirements through planning, creative design and production. Employees in this classification communicate daily with group managers, customers and peers concerning initial design/layouts, work-in-progress reviews, quality assurance, task scheduling, and project file maintenance. Physical Demands: Position operates computer terminals for prolonged periods. Special Requirements: Graphics portfolio presentation of original and shared work is required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES: Working knowledge and experienced professional skills are required with industry-standard computer graphics applications; ability to create hand drawings of thumbnail renderings for initial design/layout purposes. Ability to execute text and/or spreadsheet applications (cross application file merges), and file delivery systems. Ability to practice common professional service standards of customer interface including accurate task logging, work-in-progress reporting, and timely response to customer¿s stated needs. Excellent inter-personal communication skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Education Training Experience:Associates degree required. Bachelors degree preferred. College major in fine or commercial art, graphic arts, or a related field. Coursework or formal training in fine arts, graphic communications, media design, and/or electronic graphics applications is required. Three years experience in professional graphics department environment is required. Experience in the creation and development of a variety of visual materials preferred. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to a Associates degree, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.Certificate License:NA

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Example Duties:Develop initial design layouts (charts, graphs, diagrams, illustrations) from rough input provided by the work group manager. Utilizes the Adobe creative suite to prepare raw photography files for multi-media publishing via appropriate PhotoShop techniques, generating original vector artwork via Illustrator, and display typographic solutions and multi-page text compositions via InDesign. Participates in project management meetings to learn the project requirements, time estimate for completion. Collaborate with colleagues and customers in the development of comprehensive layouts and final proofs. Meet with client to understand their request, discuss design options, amend design according to the client¿s final comments, and develops comprehensive layouts, proofreads and prepare final proofs for print.Follows up with the customer to present the final design and validate that the customer needs are met. Monitors and maintains shared electronic file library.Maintain current skills with industry-standard software through training, reading software publications, etc.Performs related duties as assigned.
