Outdoor Education Facilities Manager

WORKING TITLE: Outdoor Education Facilities Manager GRADE: 14 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, leads and participates in the maintenance and daily upkeep of buildings, grounds, and equipment at an outdoor educational facility. The work of the class involves lead supervision and skilled work in maintaining facilities including repairs to electrical and plumbing systems, structures, landscaping, maintenance of a confidence course, and caring for animals. The Manager plans, schedules, and monitors work of crews at several outdoor education facilities, prepares work orders for maintenance personnel, orders supplies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Completion of the MCPS Building Manager Test at the required score. Working knowledge of the practices, methods, and materials of building and grounds maintenance trades; some knowledge of the care of animals; knowledge of environmental issues. Knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of equipment, tractors, etc. Ability to use and maintain the more common hand and power tools of the trade(s) to which assigned. Ability to operate farm type tractors, trucks, and light automotive equipment in a safe and effective manner. Ability and willingness to learn a wide variety of tasks required in building and grounds maintenance work.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience in the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland class C driver's license or equivalent and must acquire a Maryland State commercial class B driver's license with air brake and passenger cargo endorsement within one year of hire. Must acquire boiler operator's license within one year of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring the moving of heavy objects and to perform related strenuous labor, occasionally under adverse conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Frequent overtime; must be available to work shifts. Completion of the MCPS Building Manager Test at the required score.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plans and schedules work of semi-skilled maintenance personnel; assigns and reviews work; works with crews in the routine maintenance, repair and construction of facilities.

Sets up and maintains equipment used at the outdoor education facility including: planetarium, and observatory. Manages care of reptiles and animals, and upkeep of confidence course.

Performs skilled building and grounds maintenance work requiring use of specialized trades hand and power tools.

Assists trade specialists in constructing and maintaining facilities.

Locates suppliers for materials used by the facility.

Operates equipment/trucks for hauling lumber, brick, cement blocks, sand, stone, and other materials from maintenance yard to project sites; picks up, delivers, and assembles recreation equipment; collects and hauls ashes and other refuse from school buildings; may assist in clearing and leveling ball fields and other areas.

Operates a farm type tractor in mowing school lawns and grounds; trims trees with power saw and hauls brush; plants shrubbery and spreads lime and fertilizer; digs ditches for drainage piping and for installing electrical wires; digs post holes and erects chain-link fences; installs goal posts, back stops, and playground equipment; assists in the placing of black top, cement and stone; clears snow with tractors from sidewalks, parking lots, and other school areas.
