WORKING TITLE: Wellness Coach, DOT GRADE: 17 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under supervision of the director of the Department of Transportation (DOT) and in collaboration with the wellness coordinator in the Employee & Retirement Service Center (ERSC), designs and implements a creative wellness program for a diverse set of employees including those with health risks in the DOT advocating and promoting personal wellness, a healthy and active lifestyle, and healthy eating behaviors through wellness/educational workshops and fitness programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and exercise techniques; knowledge and skills to work with individuals who have had some health challenges, but are now cleared by their physician for independent physical activity. Ability to instruct groups or individuals in exercise activities and the fundamentals of fitness. Ability to develop wellness programs for small and large groups. Ability to identify and prepare instructors for wellness training programs. Thorough knowledge of nationally recognized fitness guidelines and regulations. Knowledge of the physiological responses that occur during exercise, specific muscles worked during exercise and the role of nutrition in physical fitness. Ability to display and/or cue proper form in a wide range of cardiovascular, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility exercises. Strong communication and human relations skills with an ability to motivate; Microsoft Office proficiency required. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Supporting Services Professional Growth System.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. AA degree preferred. College courses in kinesiology, exercise physiology, physical education, exercise science/fitness leadership, dietetics, nutrition, public health or other exercise-based discipline preferred. Current Adult CPR certification with a practical skills component (such as the American Heart Association or American Red Cross). Experience presenting informational/ training programs to a diverse audience. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Certification from nationally recognized exercise, fitness, or wellness related organizations such as: ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), ACE (American Council on Exercise), NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine), or NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) preferred. Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial class C driver's license required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Sustained physical motion for extended period of time.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Affiliation and active membership in a health and fitness organization such as Maryland Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) or American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) strongly recommended but not required. Occasional evening work may be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides workshops promoting a Healthy and Fit lifestyle following American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines to maintain and enhance physical performance, fitness, health and quality of life.

Conducts physical fitness assessments and interprets results.

Develops and implements group exercise programs for apparently healthy individuals or those who have medical clearance to exercise utilizing various types of exercise techniques.

Demonstrates proper exercise techniques.

Observes participants and informs them of corrective measures necessary to improve their skills.

Leads instructional sessions for trainers on proper and safe exercise techniques.

Provides workshops designed to motivate individuals to begin and continue with their healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Performs related work as required.
