WORKING TITLE: DFNS Family Day Care Assistant GRADE: 13 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, reviews food program operations in satellite schools and/or Child Care Food Program homes and assesses the quality of operation. Food Service Quality Control Assistants are responsible to the Food Service supervisors and receive instructions from the supervisors for further action to improve the quality of operation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Completion of the MCPS Cafeteria Manager Test at the required score. Considerable knowledge of the Child Nutrition Program, food handling techniques, sanitation procedures, and operation of kitchen equipment. Knowledge of free and reduced price meal procedures. Ability to train elementary food service personnel and/or child care food providers. Ability to determine accuracy of reporting methods. Excellent communication and human relation skills. Skill in computer use in food service operation. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Completion of the appropriate training programs required for the position. Experience in a school or other institutional food service setting and in the operation of a variety of commercial food service equipment required. Experience as a school cafeteria worker preferable. Considerable experience using Microsoft Office software products desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C drivers license, or equivalent. Current sanitation certification required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring considerable standing, operation of commercial food service equipment and movement of objects weighing 40-60 lbs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Completion of the MCPS Cafeteria Manager Test at the required score. Some overtime may be required. Requires use of personal car, with reimbursement for mileage provided.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Visits satellite schools and reviews organization and work efficiency.

2. Provides information to the Food Service Supervisor relative to meal period scheduling, ordering procedures, cash handling procedures, free and reduced price meal procedures, and equipment adequacy.

3. Visits Child Care Food Program homes and summer feeding sites to review programs for regulation compliance.

4. Reviews with the Food Service Satellite Manager the policies and procedures outlined in the Finishing Kitchen Handbook.

5. Assists in rearranging work schedule to achieve maximum efficiency, assists satellite worker in timing meal production with meal period scheduling; reviews proper food handling and sanitation techniques.

6. Refers to Food Service Supervisor recommendation for additional training or adjustment in scheduling.

7. Assesses adequacy and condition of equipment, provides information as to proper use of equipment, including conservation of energy.

8. Inspects condition of foods as delivered and whether proper receiving, storage, and handling procedures are followed.

9. Reviews established rotation and labeling system.

10. Inspects inventory amounts and system and makes adjustments if indicated.

11. Provides assistance in merchandising meals and assures that proper utensils and condiments are available.

12. Checks food for proper temperature. Inspects kitchen area for cleanliness, reviews cleaning schedule with satellite manager.

13. Determines whether proper cleaning supplies are on hand and whether proper use and procedures are followed.

14. May discuss importance of personal appearance with food service personnel.

15. Interviews students and staff regarding acceptance of program operation.

16. Evaluates dining room appearance and atmosphere.

17. Observes plate waste.

18. Determines adequacy of office equipment, reviews record keeping procedures.

19. Assists satellite manager in improving daily record reporting procedures, end-of-month records and inventory records and control.

20. May assist in establishing acceptable filing system for records; may correct records.

21. Performs related duties as required.
