SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the Training and Special Programs supervisor, this position, is responsible for training and technical support for all food service employees in the areas of school nutrition and meal service to students, customer service, managerial skills, regulatory procedures, accountability, computer applications, scheduling assignments, cafeteria staff supervision, equipment operation, and evaluation of cafeteria staff. The Division of Food and Nutrition Services (DFNS) Trainer will also work closely with the training and special programs supervisor on program operations for CACFP and Summer programs. The DFNS Trainer will work independently and collaboratively to plan, design, develop, present, and creatively enhance a variety of resources and training materials. Executes all facets of the training development life-cycle for various training types, including instructor led courses, web-based and online training, blended learning, and performance support. Provides a wide variety of support to meet the needs of our food service teams. This employee may have immediate responsibility for the management and operation of a school cafeteria. Work involves strict adherence to nutrition, sanitation, program guidelines, and economic use of food and supplies as well as expertise in knowledge of IT systems as they relate to cafeteria operations, special programs, and training. Ability to continually adapt and learn new processes, and business applications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to work with students, teachers and school leadership staff. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills, and ability to work with a variety of stakeholders in schools and offices. Ability to communicate effectively using coaching strategies and techniques with MCPS staff and others. Considerable knowledge of the National School Meals programs, CACFP, and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), including all federal, state and local guidelines. Thorough knowledge of free and reduced-price meal benefits guidelines and accountability procedures. Knowledge of nutrition and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) meal requirements. Working knowledge of management and supervision strategies consistent with MCPS standards and applicable to DFNS. Ability to train cafeteria and satellite managers in the areas of cafeteria management, delegation of duties, leadership, evaluation techniques, computer applications, accountability, HACCP guidelines for safe food handling from receiving to service, standard sanitation procedures for care and cleaning of kitchen equipment and ordering and inventory. Ability to evaluate the accuracy of reports and the use of established reporting methods. Skill in computer use, data entry and cashiering in food service operations. Knowledge and experience in planning, designing, developing, presenting, and creatively enhancing a variety of resources and training materials. Excellent organizational, presenting, and problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure and within deadlines. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor's preferred or relevant work experience. At least 3 years of experience in the food service field, with some experience in a leadership or management role. Considerable experience in developing and conducting training programs required, preferably in the food service industry or related field. Prior experience in the following preferred: A supervisory or management capacity in a school or other institutional food service setting; experience in planning, designing, developing, presenting, and creatively enhancing a variety of resources and training materials; experience in the operation of a variety of commercial food service equipment; experience in all aspects of the existing point-of-sale system; and Microsoft Office experience and skills. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Valid Class C noncommercial driver's license. Sanitation certification required or must obtain this certification during the first six months of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Personal car use required. Ability to work overtime as required. Substitute for cafeteria or satellite manager or cafeteria worker as needed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Executes all facets of the training development life-cycle, including planning, designing, delivering training for DFNS.

Creates and enhances training material in a variety of media (online guides, videos, simulations, presentations, etc.)

Delivers training in a variety of formats and venues to meet the needs of the diverse learning styles of MCPS staff.

Collaborates in the development and delivery of training content, including planning and scheduling of training sessions.

Provides guidance and support to school-based staff with school operations and technical IT support.

Conducts a variety of operations reviews required by federal, state and local guidelines.

Actively maintains current knowledge of associated laws, policies and guidelines to apply to operations reviews, cafeteria management and training to ensure ongoing compliance.

Visit schools to review the organization and efficiency of cafeteria operation, as necessary.

Trains new managers and cafeteria workers.

Functions as a mentor to new managers.

Ensures compliance with the policies and procedures in the Cafeteria Management Handbook.

Ensures compliance with HACCP guidelines for safe food handling from receiving to service.

Occasionally manages and oversees operation of a school cafeterias as needed.

Supports CACFP and summer programs through training, conducting reviews and monitoring programs, and supporting the supervisor with program planning and supervision.

Performs related duties as required.
