WORKING TITLE: General Maintenance Worker I GRADE: 09 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs unskilled and semiskilled work in the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. Employees assigned to this classification perform a variety of tasks and assignments in support of skilled maintenance work (e.g., landscaping, roads/grounds, construction, etc.). Employees operate a variety of manual and power tools and equipment to carry out their assignments. As employees gain experience in the work performed and MCPS operations, they may be assigned from time to time more difficult tasks and assignments of a semiskilled nature. Employees perform routine and repetitive tasks without close supervision but typically receive specific work instructions at the beginning of any new task or assignment. Some assignments involve exposure to inclement weather and employees are subject to accident and injury hazards/risks and very disagreeable work environments including dirt, dust, extreme temperatures, odors, grease, etc. Workers are required to observe safety procedures and practices and/or wear or use specialized protective clothing or equipment while performing work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Successful completion of the completion of the MCPS General Maintenance Worker written (knowledge) and hands-on (demonstration) skills test at the minimum or higher required score. Basic knowledge of safe work practices and procedures used in maintenance work. Working mechanical knowledge of commercial trucks and equipment to complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections. Basic knowledge of practices and procedures followed when performing more skilled maintenance and repair work (e.g., asphalt, concrete, power equipment operation, fencing, snow removal, landscaping, graffiti removal, etc. Knowledge of county recycling program. Ability to operate commercial trucks with trailers to move large equipment site to site. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read and complete basic written reports and work orders about the work performed. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, occasionally in adverse work conditions. Ability to operate a variety of equipment including hand and power tools, power mowers, tractors, and light trucks. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of a ninth grade education required. Additional education levels accomplished desirable. Completion of in-service training courses or equivalent. Documented experience in performing building maintenance and general construction/maintenance work. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C or equivalent driver's license. Ability to Acquire a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B within 6 months of starting date of employment required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring the lifting and moving of very heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs. and to perform related strenuous labor, occasionally under adverse conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies. Required to wear personal protective equipment as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Drives varied trucks (pick-up, dump, rack) to and from work sites to haul equipment and workers to work sites; secures loaded truck to prevent debris from falling out of truck; drives truck for special trash pick-ups (car parts, dead tree limbs, etc.) and regular trash pick-ups; deposits trash and debris at county dump.

Performs safety checks for vehicles operated including lights, oil, tires, and hook-ups on trailers and on all vehicles operated.

Participates as part of work team/crew in the following work activities at various MCPS work sites (schools, parking lots, play areas, athletic fields, etc.):

Asphalt/Concrete--- breaks up old surface using jack hammer, compressor; loads pieces on. truck using shovels, etc.; prepares asphalt bed ; levels base coat with rakes and tamps down with hand or gas powered tamper; adjusts truck bed to control asphalt flow; levels top coat using tamper or roller; sprays with water; cuts wire using bolt cutters in old concrete; installs reinforcement wire and expansion joints; measures and estimates amounts of concrete and spreads with rakes; use edger and striker to make lines.

Landscaping---cuts grass using large tractors with mower deck, weed eaters; sharpens mower blades; prunes, cuts, and trims trees using chain saw, pruning shears, saws etc.; loads clippings on truck; fertilizes and seeds designated areas using truck and seeders; throws straw on areas; waters periodically to ensure growth; plants trees and shrubs and fertilizes periodically.

Fencing---removes old fence and takes measurements for new fence; cuts new fence and pipe; prepares concrete mix for fence holes; installs new fence using fence stretcher and wire ties; places caps on poles securely.

Snow removal---push snow away from sidewalks, driveways, parking spaces, loading docks using shovels, snow plow, etc.; spread sand using sander and/or shovels.

Play Equipment---remove, repair, and install play equipment and hand rails; may fabricate hand rails (cutting, welding, grinding, painting); replace wooden pieces for custom fit.

Athletic Fields---replace chain fencing on backstops; installs posts; remove, repair, and reinstall bleachers; grades fields to ensure proper water runoff-, add and remove dirt as required with shovels, loader, and transit; re-sod, seed, and straw as required; digs ditches with shovels and backhoe occasionally; fabricates and installs bases; removes clotted dirt, stones, etc. from infield using tractor with leveling rail.

Trash Removal---drives trash truck to school site; empties trash containers and secures trash after loading on truck; transports trash to dump and unloads.

General Maintenance---moves furniture; removes debris from storm drains and secures; removes graffiti from MCPS buildings and structures; sharpens blades and tools using grinder; ensures tools and equipment used are clean and in good working order when finished.

Completes work orders, times cards and appropriate forms (e.g., materials used, prices, quantity used, dates, hours, etc.)Installs signs on MCPS sites; places warning signs and barricades at work sites for safety purposes and to inform others.

May cut and install ceiling tile. Assists trades personnel to unclog drains and run new pipe, install glass, walls/cabinets, and electrical fixtures; remove carpet; move heavy HVAC units.

Evaluate/install storm drains to fix water erosion problems.

Recycle approved materials based on county guidelines.

Understands and applies principles of performance evaluation and professional growth standards for employees.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
