WORKING TITLE: Equipment Operator GRADE: 12 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, operates heavy automotive equipment in the maintenance of school grounds or general construction work and performs semiskilled and manual tasks in connection with such operations. Work in this class involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of heavy motor equipment in the maintenance and construction of school grounds. When not engaged in operating or maintaining equipment, employees perform varied general maintenance tasks in the shop or field. Assignments are outlined in detail by supervisors. Standard procedures are followed and work is inspected periodically for compliance with work standards and instructions. Employees in this class may serve as a working leader of small groups of general maintenance workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the effective operation of automotive equipment such as graders, bulldozers, rollers, loaders, backhoes, and tractors. Working knowledge of traffic, highway safety rules and regulations. Good knowledge of the hazards involved in the use of heavy equipment and of the safety precautions to be taken. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate with others, including completion of some basic reports or other written information. Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to automotive equipment. Ability to perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance of grounds and general construction projects. Ability to move heavy objects. Skill in the operation of varied types of heavy equipment utilized by MCPS. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of the ninth grade required. High School or GED diploma preferred. Experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment in the maintenance of the grounds and general construction work. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland commercial class A driver's license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to safely operate equipment. Ability to perform work requiring movement and lifting of heavy objects and some physical exertion.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Some jobs involve exposure to inclement weather, accidents, injury, hazards and disagreeable elements. Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies. Required to wear personal protective equipment as required. Ability to work overtime as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Operates grading equipment to remove trees and brush, and to clear and level school grounds, ball fields, parking lots.

2. Operates heavy duty truck tractor engaged in hauling heavy equipment and materials.

3. Operates truck and tractors in clearing snow from school areas.

4. Operates truck with elevator bucket to reach heights.

5. Operates a variety of equipment in preparing areas for retaining walls, blacktop, concrete walks and the installation of playground equipment and underground piping and wiring.

6. Operates a roller grader, trencher, front and loader and other equipment.

7. Assists in machine repairs, greasing, cleaning and washing of equipment.

8. Performs semiskilled tasks as assigned, related to the construction of paved areas, and the repair of fencing, backstops, goal posts, etc; mixes, pours and finishes concrete walks.

9. Lays blocks, bricks and pipes.

10. Performs related work as required.
