Mechanical Systems Technician I - IV (Shift 1)

WORKING TITLE: Mechanical Systems Technician I - IV (Shift 1) GRADE: 16-19 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Staff in this job family provides all levels of mechanical skills trades support and maintenance of school and building equipment. Based on the assigned level, this work may include analyzing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, installing, repairing, replacing, building, prefabricating, altering and maintaining equipment related to HVAC, refrigeration, boilers, gas, plumbing, heating, firebrick and sheet metal; performing related duties as required or assigned. Supervises the Central Processing Facility (CPF) Equipment Operator. Supervision Received/Given - Under general direction from a team leader or supervisor; frequently works independently; may assist with the training/mentoring of employees in other mechanical skills trades, as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Successful completion of the MCPS written (knowledge) and skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required score. Can demonstrate knowledge of principles, concepts, and methods of electrical and mechanical components and equipment; good working knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn new equipment and technology requirements; knowledge of standard equipment operating systems; proficiency at use of tools associated with the trades; ability to operate in a safe working environment; possess computer skills including Internet access. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS). Requirements are as follows: For MST I - skilled; proficient in one mechanical trade. For MST II - highly skilled; proficient in one mechanical trade; capable in others. For MST III - very highly skilled; proficient in two mechanical trades. For MST IV - most highly skilled; proficient in three mechanical trades
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience in mechanical skills trades as follows: For MST I - at least two years in trade-related work under professional supervision. For MST II - at least three years in trade-related work under professional supervision. For MST III - at least five years in trade-related work under professional supervision. For MST IV - at least seven years in trade-related work; have worked independently. Completion of certified courses, i.e., heat pump, universal refrigerant certification, cross-connection certification. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid driver's license. Journeyman certificate, preferred. Pass MCPS written (knowledge) and skills (demonstration) tests. Equivalent certifications and/or state and county licenses, preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) The work is done indoors and outdoors. Work spaces can range from outdoor scaffolding (roof) to crawl spaces inside a wall. Ability to lift and carry 100+ pounds. Work is often in close and confined spaces and often requires the use of potentially dangerous equipment such as torches and power grinders. The work is physically demanding and dirty.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Unusual hours and extensive time demands during summer and other peak periods. Successful completion of the MCPS written (knowledge) and skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required score. Written and Hands on skills tests will be administered by appointment only and can only be taken 3 times per year.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. NOTE: Duties and responsibilities are noted for single mechanical trades - HVAC-R, Boiler and/or Plumbing.

MST I (grade 16 - proficient in one mechanical trade)

Diagnoses and repairs/replaces mechanical systems.
Interprets instructions, drawings, and specifications.

Tests and calibrates equipment and systems.
Performs preventive maintenance (PM) on equipment.
Understands and uses tools, instruments and devices properly.
Observes safety precautions.* Uses building automation control systems properly.
Evaluates/repairs mechanical problems.
Possesses basic computer user knowledge.
Applies appropriate procedure.
Describes technical problems to supervisor and others for appropriate action.
Exchanges information with customers & staff.
Displays awareness of unsafe practices and takes appropriate action.
Successfully completes one basic computer training and one Career development class.

MST II (grade 17 - proficient in one mechanical trade - capable in others).

Performs all the duties of the MST I, plus the following:
Determines appropriate procedures.
Explains likely causes of problem.
Explains problems to customers & staff.
Identifies safety procedures and practices.
Successfully completes two intermediate computer training and two Career development classes.

MST III (grade 18 - proficient in two mechanical trades).

Performs all the duties of the MST I & II, plus the following:
Uses MS Office software; performs Internet research.
Evaluates procedures and considers impact of actions.
Proposes changes to prevent problems.
Discusses problems and solutions with customers & staff.
Communicates safety procedures and protocols.
Successfully completes two advanced computer training courses and two Supervisory Development classes.

MST IV (grade 19 - proficient in three mechanical trades).

Performs all the duties of the MST I, II & III plus the following:
Supervises the CPF Equipment Operator.
Evaluates procedures and considers impact of actions; proposes new procedures.
Writes draft instructions and directions.
Resolves problems and concerns with customers & staff.
Communicates and models safety procedures and protocols; assists with safety training.

Understands and applies principles of performance evaluation and professional growth standards for employees.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
