WORKING TITLE: Apprentice I/II GRADE: 11-13 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, learns and performs a series of tasks by assisting more senior-level trade workers in a skilled trade shop (carpentry, electrical, HVAC-R, or plumbing) within a Division of Maintenance and Operations (DMO) service center. Performs pre-journeyman-level skilled work in maintenance, service, and repair tasks in an assigned trade. Assists with the preparation, operation, and cleaning of tools and equipment, cleans worksites and areas, loads/ unloads materials, tools, and equipment from vehicles, and performs assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the assigned trade. Apprentice I (grade 11) is an entry-level position that works under the general direction of a journey-level position. Apprentice II (grade 13) is a semi-skilled position that works with some independence under general direction of a journey-level position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Fundamental knowledge and skills related to electrical and mechanical components and functions of HVAC-R systems and/or boilers, plumbing, electrical, or carpentry. Basic awareness of tools associated with the specific trade. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. The DMO apprenticeship program combines on-the-job experience and classroom-based instruction over a period of four years. Apprentices must demonstrate common use of math (including algebra or equivalent), reading, writing, and the ability to communicate clearly. Apprentices must be able to correctly and safely use all tools associated with the specific trade. The apprentice must be able to comprehend and follow written, verbal, and visual directions. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland non-commercial driver's license (Class C) or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Trade work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Workspaces can range from outdoor scaffolding (roof) to crawl spaces inside a wall. Work is often performed in close and confined spaces and often requires the use of potentially dangerous equipment such as torches and power grinders. The work can be physically demanding and dirty. Must be able to lift and carry 100+ pounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work overtime as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

APPRENTICE I (Grade 11):
1. Diagnoses and repairs/replaces mechanical systems, parts or structures as directed within the assigned trade (carpentry, electrical, HVAC-R, or plumbing).
2. Interprets instructions, drawings, and specifications.
3. Assesses, tests, calibrates or repairs the structure, equipment or systems, relative to the assigned trade.
4. Performs preventive, corrective, and reactive maintenance on equipment, fixtures, structures or systems.
5. Understands and properly and safely uses tools, instruments and devices.
6. Observes safety precautions.
7. Uses building automation control systems properly.
8. Apprentice maintains boilers, equipment, systems and structures to correct, resume and/or maintain service, which may include (for HVAC-R trade): supplying and maintaining heat or steam for buildings, marine vessels, or operation of pneumatic tools.
9. Provides preventive maintenance (PM) and repair for electrical systems, plumbing, structures or heating and steam boilers and equipment, using hand tools.
10. Records test or assessment results on specified form and gives to worker or supervisor.
11. Fabricates or repairs plumbing, HVAC-R systems using mechanical means or welding; or repairs structures using woodworking machines and power saws, electric drills, sanders, wood lathes, power joiners, planers, and other tools and equipment as part of shop operations.
12. Uses testing devices and assessment techniques/processes to ensure sample materials, equipment and structures meet specifications.
13. Cleans and maintains tools equipment, cleans worksites and areas, loads/ unloads materials, tools, and equipment from vehicles.
14. Moves, controls and observes gauges to regulate heat and steam.
15. Installs burners and auxiliary equipment, using hand tools.
16. Obtains samples from designated location on boiler and carries samples to testing laboratory.
17. Maintains and repairs water circulating pumps.
18. Performs work related to the specific trade as required.


APPRENTICE II (Grade 13):
The apprentice I will advance to the apprentice II after the completion of 2000 work hours, a MCPS knowledge and skills test, and sufficient on-the-job training.

1. Performs the apprentice I duties with less supervision and more accuracy and independence.
2. Produces and presents more comprehensive reports, assessments and repair recommendations in assigned trade.
3. Under general supervision independently and accurately assesses work orders and repair needs and submits appropriate replacement parts and materials under general supervision.
