SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, cleans, checks, and makes minor service repairs, and assists in major repairs of oil burners, boilers, and related heating equipment. Employees in this class perform a variety of semiskilled tasks in servicing central heating equipment and control units. A major responsibility of this class is the periodic cleaning of the interiors of boilers to ensure safe and efficient operation. Other assignments include working as a helper to a mechanic or as a member of a team engaged in major repair or rebuilding of burners, boilers, controls, and related heating equipment. An employee in this class may work independently in performing very routine and repetitive tasks. Nature of the work involves working in close and dirty spaces with some exposure to accident and injury hazards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Successful completion of the completion of the MCPS Heating written (knowledge) and hands-on (demonstration) skills test at the minimum or higher required score. Some knowledge of the methods, tools, materials, and equipment involved in checking and servicing temperature controls and oil burner equipment; working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the servicing of heating equipment. Ability to service and make minor adjustments and repairs to oil burners and related heating equipment. Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the servicing of oil burners and related heating equipment. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Some experience in the servicing and maintenance of heating equipment. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. This position is part of the Mechanical Systems job family.MSW grade 10 - one year successful completion in the MSW position.MSW grade 11 - two years successful completion in the MSW position.MSW grade 12 - three years successful completion in the MSW position.MSW grade 13 - four years successful completion in the MSW position.MSW grade 14 - five years successful completion in the MSW position.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C driver's license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring considerable physical exertion and to lift/move heavy objects. Ability to work in close spaces and to wear protective clothing/equipment as required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work occasional overtime. Completion of the MCPS Heating Test at the required score.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Cleans interiors of boilers using brushes, industrial vacuum, and other equipment; checks boiler tubes for damage or corrosion, and reports findings to shop supervisor.

2. Participates in cleaning and overhauling oil burners during non-heating season.

3. Assist Mechanical Systems Technicians I - IV, as needed, in responding to repair tickets.

4. Performs semiskilled tasks in assisting a heating mechanic or a firebrick and refractory repair worker engaged in rebuilding or major repair of heating equipment including: removing and replacing oil pumps, lifting heavy units, tracing thermostat lines to locate leads and repairing or replacing leaking area, removing and replacing refractory material, and cleaning up work areas after repairs are completed.

5. May check and routinely calibrate thermostats and low limit controls.

6. May clean, check, and adjust burner nozzle and electrodes.

7. May answer emergency calls regarding improper temperature levels in classrooms and offices.

8. Performs related work as required.
