Integrated Pest Management Supervisor

WORKING TITLE: Integrated Pest Management Supervisor GRADE: 19 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, plans and supervises integrated pest management services for schools and central facilities. Responsible for ensuring compliance with Maryland Department of Agriculture regulations on integrated pest management. Supervises, evaluates and trains integrated pest management technicians and leads team in the implementation of the IPM plan.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of environmental and health and sanitation requirements and integrated pest management principles and procedures, including related tools and equipment, pest identification/characteristics, control recommendations and pesticides, and application techniques. Knowledge of biology and toxicology. Ability to plan and effectively supervise a comprehensive integrated pest management program for a large organization. Moderate computer skills required. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills. Ability to lead a team and prioritize multiple tasks. Knowledge of or ability to quickly obtain knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS) of MCPS. Must have the ability to work with students and staff of diverse academic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds with sensitivity and cultural competency. Ability to effectively mediate conflicts among staff members; assist with analyzing problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, implement sustainable practices, and make recommendations in support of the goals of the Division of Sustainability and Compliance, the Department of Facilities Management, and MCPS.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school required. Some college courses in a related field or relevant training as approved by the Maryland Department of Agriculture. At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in integrated pest management. Some supervisory experience required. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) pest control applicator certification in Category VI (right-of-way weed), VII-A (general), VII-B (termite), VII-C (bird), VII-D (rodent), VIII (public health), Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife permit. Valid Class C Maryland driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to move moderately heavy objects, climb ladders and complete inspection of work and related activities. Inspect, crawl and work in sub-areas, basements and attics of structures.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to respond to emergency work requirements at any time and to work overtime and unusual hours.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Plans and implements pest management strategy and oversees day-to-day activities of the team.

2. Promotes BOE Policy ECA, Sustainability, Regulation ECF-RB, Pesticides Use in Schools, and other related regulations; and fosters compliance and related culture change.

3. Schedules, assigns, reviews and supervises MCPS integrated pest management (IPM) services.

4. Reviews and assigns all incoming pest related work order requests. Assists technicians with difficult work assignments.

5. Maintains a computerized record keeping system to store completed MCPS work orders, and creates related requests as required. Records must be up to date and available upon request by Maryland Department of Agriculture.

6. Maintains pesticide storage room in compliance with state agricultural regulations.

7. Meets with Maryland Department of Agriculture Inspector to review record keeping, pesticide storage, transporting of pesticides, maintenance of trucks, etc. to ensure that program is compliant with federal and state laws and regulations.

8. Visits schools reporting presence of pests to verify necessity for treatment.

9. Meets with administrator or designee to determine appropriate plan of treatment.

10. Reviews and evaluates IPM employee work performance.

11. Arranges for specialized and re-certification training programs for staff; mentors and coaches employees as necessary.

12. Keeps up-to-date with latest pest management techniques and equipment

13. Purchase supplies and materials, and identifies ways to cut waste.

14. Reviews written regulations, list of pesticides and worker practices to ensure compliance and that the least hazardous but still effective methods are chosen

15. Prepares written documentation and reports using common software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Asset Essentials).

16.Communicates professionally and effectively with a wide variety of people.

17. Performs related work as required
