SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, HVAC-R assistant supervisors provide all levels of installation, ongoing maintenance, repair, and renovation activities of the commercial heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment housed in the MCPS facilities located within the region served by a Division of Maintenance and Operations service center. Assistant supervisors take responsibility for the overall performance of the entire HVAC-R team and the activities of individual team members. In this working position, the HVAC-R assistant supervisor may need to perform the duties of an HVAC-R I or II technician while helping to plan, schedule, organize, and coordinate the day-to-day operation and workflow of the service center's HVAC-R technician team. The assistant supervisor assists with assigning HVAC-R service requests to the appropriate technician for completion, ensuring that work orders are processed and performed promptly, and maintaining relevant work order records as required. The assistant supervisor also helps with coordinating requests for parts and materials and assisting the service center managers in the administration and management of the mechanical maintenance program. Assistant supervisors are also responsible for recruiting, staffing, evaluating, developing, and recognizing technicians. Assistant supervisors implement and enforce systems, policies, and procedures while maintaining safe and healthy work environments. The assistant supervisor has a greater degree of involvement in the day-to-day assignment of work and supervision of work activities than the supervisors and a lesser level of involvement in policy, overall program planning, and customer communications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the methods procedures, tools, and equipment of building mechanical systems, construction and renovation, school equipment, and facilities maintenance (multiple trades). Considerable knowledge of how to operate building mechanical equipment in an efficient manner. While the depth of the technical knowledge is comparable to a Level II technician in a single trade is ideal, it is not required because the breadth of mechanical systems knowledge is critical. Ability to effectively supervise shop and field maintenance activities, including the assignment of work and completion of accurate work orders. Ability to make accurate labor and cost estimates, maintain records and complete maintenance related reports. Ability to evaluate maintenance activities and employee performance and to make sound recommendations for the prompt, efficient, and effective maintenance of school facilities. Ability to oversee employee work standards and safety, compliance, building efficiency, and occupant health and comfort. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the even core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Successful completion of some coursework or trade school training in mechanical trades, safety, computer applications, facilities management, or supervision required. Considerable experience in building mechanical systems maintenance, construction and renovation, school equipment, and facilities maintenance, including lead or supervisory experience required. Comprehensive knowledge of procedures, techniques, materials, equipment, tools involved in a wide variety of installation, maintenance, and repair activities of all trades supervised. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid driver's license is required. Must possess a valid EPA-approved universal CFC license and an active state-issued HVAC Journeyman license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as, extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises. Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required objects up to 50 pounds. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work beyond a 40-hour work week as required.

2. Assists with supervising the day-to-day operation of mechanical trades' functions; assigns maintenance work requests and scheduled preventive work, which have been approved for completion, to the appropriate technicians. Coordinates work activities requiring more than one trade skill; supervises the planning, work scheduling, work evaluation, procurement of parts and equipment, and work order/records completion activities of the mechanical trades' technicians.

3. Assists in ensuring work in progress and completed work meets established quality assurance and control standards, or normal trade standards. Investigates work-related problems such as excessive costs or low productivity and determines causes. Implements corrective actions within authority to resolve work problems. Identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and quality of service.

4. Provides exceptional customer service. Visits facilities and job sites to identify/clarify plant and mechanical equipment work requests; to plan major work and resolve problem areas; and to inspect/evaluate work activities and completed work performed by in-house technicians or contractors. Facilitates relationships between staff and administrators.

5. Meets with staff as required and conducts meetings as needed.

6. Ensures that all safety standards and requirements are met.
