OFFICIAL TITLE: Plumber I-II CODE: 8341 SQ/OQ: Optimal Qualified
WORKING TITLE: Plumber I-II GRADE: 18-20 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, provides all levels of plumbing and gas fitting and maintenance of school and building equipment systems. Based on the assigned level, this work may include analyzing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, installing, repairing, replacing, building, prefabricating, altering and maintaining equipment related to plumbing and gas fitting. Frequently works independently; may assist with the training and mentoring of other plumber/gas fitter employees. There are two levels/grades for this position: grade 18 and grade 20.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of principles, concepts, and methods of electrical and mechanical components of systems. Knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, new equipment and technology requirements. Knowledge of standard equipment operating procedures and ability to perform complex system operations. Ability to correctly and safely use tools associated with the plumbing and gas fitting trades. Ability to comprehend written, verbal, and visual directions, and to communicate with others clearly. Ability to use computers, including administrative software applications and computerized maintenance management systems. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the even core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Plumber I (grade 18) - High School or GED diploma required. Successful completion of an acceptable apprentice level plumbing/gas fitting program, plus four years of progressive experience in plumbing, pipefitting, or commercial kitchen, two years of which shall have been at the apprentice II or equivalent level. Plumber II (grade 20) - High School or GED diploma required. Successful completion of an acceptable apprentice level plumbing/gas fitting program, plus five years of progressive experience in plumbing or gas fitting, two years of which shall have been at the journey level.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid driver's license is required for all levels. Additional certifications or licenses are required, as follows: Plumber I: Must possess and maintain a valid backflow certification Plumbing II : Must possess and maintain valid backflow certification and active journeyman license
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job. Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as, extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises. Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is more than 70% of the job. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work beyond a 40-hour work week as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plumber I (grade 18)
1. Maintains and repairs general plumbing components to include toilets, urinals, faucets, hose bibs, and drains.

2. Installs, repairs, or replaces domestic hot and cold water lines.

3. Repairs water distribution piping and waste water piping including steam and hot water systems.

4. Performs preventive maintenance on plumbing systems, including exercising valves.

5. Installs new pipe to accommodate system expansion or modification.

6. Assists higher level plumbers in the completion of licensed plumbing work.

7. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

9. Summary of distinguishing characteristics: Performing basic trouble shooting and repair; clearing blocked pipes using power equipment; re-piping and installing new components; and back flow certification.


Plumber II (grade 20)
1. Maintains and repairs general plumbing components to include toilets, urinals, faucets, hose bibs, and drains.

2. Installs, repairs, or replaces domestic hot and cold water lines.

3. Repairs and replaces domestic hot water heat exchangers and water heaters.

4. Repairs and replaces pneumatic steam valves, radiator valves, traps, and steam and condensate pipes.

5. Repairs and replaces domestic hot water heat pumps, chilled water pumps, sump pumps, and sewage pumps.

6. Installs, tests, and repairs all sizes of backflow prevention devices.

7. Troubleshoots and repairs steam, water, and gas utility distribution systems.

8. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

10. Summary of distinguishing characteristics: Troubleshooting and repairing utility distribution systems including heat exchangers, valves, PRVs, backflow, equipment room piping, building distribution systems, waste systems and gas systems.
