Electric Motor Mechanic

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs skilled and minor supervisory work in the repair, rebuilding, disassembly and assembly of electric motors and related equipment. An employee in this class performs highly skilled work requiring advanced knowledge of electric motors and related equipment and electrical circuits. Work is normally carried out in a shop location, but employees in this class may be required to visit field locations to inspect malfunctioning motors and assess nature and extent of damage. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate electricians engaged in electric motor repair; nature of work is such to occasionally require responding to nonduty hours emergency calls concerning electric motor problems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of approved methods and practices involved in installing, maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding electric motors and related equipment; considerable knowledge of electrical code requirements and acceptable safety standards concerning electrical wiring and equipment; considerable knowledge of the hazards of the trade and or appropriate precautionary measures. Ability to work from electrical diagrams and blueprints; ability to inspect malfunctioning electric motors, determine cause of malfunction, and repair or rebuild motor; ability to determine when repair or rebuilding is not economically practical; ability to keep time and material records; and prepare basic reports. Preferred knowledge and skills of machining. Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools of the trade. Good human relations and communications skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. One year progressively responsible electrician experience making major repairs and rebuilding of electrical motors, or completion of a recognized electrician apprentice program and considerable progressively responsible work experience, one year of which shall have involved motor work as described above. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class D driver's license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring standing, lifting/moving of heavy motors, and field inspection activities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) None

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Inspects and maintains electric motors in heating, ventilating, and water systems, refrigerators, freezers, and other equipment.

Inspects malfunctioning electric motors at field site or in shop; determines cause of malfunction and repairs necessary to correct.

Removes repairable electric motors from field site and takes to shop area.

Disassembles damaged or worn motors in shop; repairs damaged or defective parts, including performing repair or rebuild operations such as turning armatures, replacing bearings, rewiring motors, and replacing brushes.

Cleans and oils repaired locations or arranges for another electrician to reinstall motor.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
