Summary Description:
Under direction, assigns work to and supervises the day-to-day work of materials fabrication workers, reupholsters, seamsters, masons and other employees who inspect, service, adjust, repair, replace, manufacture and install venetian blinds, draperies, shades, audiovisual curtains, maps, movie screens, stage curtains, stage hardware, stage scenery, stage prop equipment, gymnasium equipment, physical education and sports equipment, reupholstering furniture and equipment, and flame proofing. Also assigns, coordinates, and supervises related carpentry and touchup painting work. Oversees contracted stage rigging inspections, and associated repairs by staff and contractors.
Physical Demands:
Ability to work from ladders and in high areas such as stage fly lofts, to follow and enforce sound safety practices, and to lift heavy objects.
Special Requirements:
Ability to respond to emergency calls and to work occasional overtime. |
Thorough knowledge of the hand and power tools, equipment, procedures, and materials necessary to effect repair work; thorough knowledge of the characteristics of a wide variety of instructional and gymnasium equipment; considerable knowledge of the carpentry and paint trades. Ability to effectively plan, assign, and provide day-to-day supervision through Maximo of materials fabrication workers, reupholsterers, seamsters, masons and others. Ability to maintain operating records and prepare reports. Ability to analyze equipment and malfunctions and to make alterations and adjustments. Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade. Good human relations and oral and written communications skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Education Training Experience:High School or GED diploma required. Considerable experience of increasing responsibility in carpentry and/or materials fabrication, such as inspection, repair, overhaul, installation and maintenance of venetian blinds, stage equipment, reupholstery of furniture and equipment, carpentry and painting work. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. Some experience in a lead capacity desirable.Certificate License:Possession of a valid Maryland class C driver^s license, or equivalent.

Example Duties:Supervises the day-to-day operation of the shop; assigns maintenance work requests, schedules work and coordinates work activities with other shops.Monitors Maximo work order/records completion activities, reviews employee reports and verifies accuracy. Conducts weekly reviews of backlog with staff, and collaborates to develop plans for addressing aged work. Ensures proper and timely completion of work orders.Clarifies work order requests from schools and ensures the proper and timely completion of data required on the work order request forms.Evaluates and counsels employees. Creates requisitions for parts/equipment, and manages inventory and records. Estimates contractual repair costs, and completes job reports. Oversees contractual installations, inspections and repairs (such as stage rigging, classroom swing/hoists etc).Assists in evaluating the condition of various types of administrative and school furniture, physical education and gymnastics equipment and mechanical equipment regarding safety, operating life, and repair/replacement needs. Surveys and investigates new types of equipment on the market.May prepare specifications or make recommendations to department staff on purchase of specialized equipment, parts and assemblages.Coordinates support work with other shops in the Division of Maintenance and makes recommendations.Complies and ensures that all employees within the shop are in compliance with MCPS and DOM policies and procedures; such as procurement, work orders, inventory, vehicle care, scrap, leave, SSPGS, safety, and security.Inspects quality of work in progress and upon completion to ensure conformance with prescribed standards.Performs/oversees the more difficult installation and repairs of equipment.Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
