WORKING TITLE: Reupholsterer GRADE: 13 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION; PHYSICAL DEMANDS; AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Summary Description: Under direction, performs skilled work in the reupholstery and restoration of school and office furniture and similar equipment. An employee in this class fabricates, secures, and repairs a variety of upholstered furniture, box mattresses, curtains, gym equipment, and coverings. Work involves the inspection of worn, ripped or damaged items, and determination of the time and materials needed to effect repairs. Assignments are generally received in the form of written work orders and may involve consultation with administrative staff in the selection of individual design fabrics. Physical Demands: Ability to lift heavy objects, perform work requiring manual dexterity; considerable standing, bending, and lifting of heavy objects; occasional use of ladders, scaffolds, etc. Special Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES: Completion of the MCPS Reupholsterer Skills Test at the required score.Considerable knowledge of upholstery materials, methods, and tools; considerable knowledge of vinyls, plastics, and foam cushioning, of furniture stripping and seat rebuilding, and of the operation of hand and power driven upholstery trade tools; considerable knowledge of fabric repair, sewing, and furniture restoration; working knowledge of the carpentry trade. Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to strip, reupholster and/or repair furniture items; ability to stitch and match fabrics, operate a commercial sewing machine, and make estimates of materials needed to complete assignments; ability to repair and install blinds, curtains, etc. Good communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Education Training Experience:High School or GED diploma required. Considerable experience in the reupholstery and renovation of a variety of school and office furniture. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial class C driver^s license, or equivalent.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Example Duties:Strips off torn or defective fabric; removes frame tacks, staples and fasteners; inspects furniture for structural weakness and reinforces or glues as necessary; replaces or repairs broken springs. Stretches and tacks webbing across furniture frame; rebuilds seat foundation, covering inner coils with burlap; cuts and layers padding/cushioning material; measures, matches, and sews outside fabrics; attaches decorative buttons, beads, etc. Reupholsters miscellaneous items such as school and office chairs, auditorium seats, sofas, truck and mattress covers, gym pads, etc.; inspects work to be performed and obtains estimates on price and delivery time of needed materials; maintains records of work performed. May, on occasion, check, replace or install gymnastic equipment; maintain blinds, shades, screens, curtains; and similar school and office items. Performs related work as required.
