Industrial Equipment Supervisor

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs skilled and technical supervisory work in the inspection, maintenance and repair of varied types of industrial equipment. An employee in this class is responsible for planning and laying out work details, assigning duties, and directing the work of shop repair mechanics. Nature of the work requires frequent visits to school and office facilities to inspect subordinates' and contractor work, to advise on complex jobs or to perform the more difficult adjustments and repairs to equipment. An employee in this class further surveys and evaluates the condition of a large assortment of industrial tools, equipment, and machinery to make recommendation as to repair or replacement and is responsible for the overall shop, and supervises, evaluates performance, develops and recognizes shop employee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used in repairing variety of items; including printing equipment, motors, kilns, trash compactors, signs, cabinets, painting, elevators and other various electrical equipment. Thorough knowledge of the characteristics of a wide variety of machine units and specialized equipment. Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others and contractors; ability to maintain operating records and prepare reports and the ability to analyze equipment malfunctions and to make effective alterations and adjustments. Good human relations and written and oral communications skills. Good computer skills for processing work orders and responding to e-mails. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Considerable experience in the inspection, repair, overhaul, and maintenance of a wide range of industrial education equipment to include specifically printing, carpentry, metal, auto and industrial art equipment, as well as HVAC and electrical motors. Considerable experience in a supervisory capacity and managing contractors. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland class D. driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring considerable standing and bending and occasional lifting of moderately heavy objects.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to respond to emergency calls at any time and to work overtime as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Complies and ensures that all employees within the shop are in compliance with MCPS and DOM policies and procedures; such as procurement, work orders, inventory, vehicle care, scrap, leave, SSPGS, safety, and security.

2. Supervises the day-to-day operation of the shop; assigns maintenance work requests, schedules preventive work and coordinates work activities within the shop and with other depots and shops; supervises the planning, work scheduling, employee and work evaluation, parts/equipment procurement, inventory management and work order/records completion activities.

3. Assists the area maintenance managers in completing school and job site visits, work planning and evaluation, budget estimates, costs and labor assignments to maintenance projects, prioritizing work requests, and other activities related to administration and management of the shop.

4. Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of technicians and/or contractors in the repair and maintenance of MCPS printing equipment, cabinets, kilns, trash compactors, signs, HVAC and electrical motors, elevators and other various electrical equipment. In addition, plans, assigns, and supervises the work of two painters.
5. Makes estimates of time, materials, and labor charges.

6. Inspects quality of work in progress and upon completion to ensure conformance with prescribed standards.

7. Replace defective equipment parts and tests for operational effectiveness.
8. Evaluates the condition of various industrial equipment and advises as to safety, operating life, and repair/replacement needs.

9. Surveys and investigates new types of equipment on the market and may prepare specifications or make recommendations to departmental staff prior to procurement.

10. Oversees a continuing preventive maintenance program.

11. Provides data on diverse makes/models of equipment from work manuals and catalogues.

12. Maintains records of job time and materials; maintains purchase records; reviews time records and verifies accuracy.

13. Ensures proper and timely completion of work orders, including regular review of backlog.

14. Clarifies work order requests from schools and ensures the proper and timely completion of data required on the work order request forms.

15. Responsible for monitoring the performance contractors when needed.

16. Performs related work as required.
