Water Treatment Technician

WORKING TITLE: Water Treatment Technician GRADE: 14 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, chemically tests and treats water in boilers, water towers, and other water containers to prevent or retard scale, rust, pitting, corrosion, and other damage due to impurities in the water; keeps records of containers tested and treatment rendered. An employee in this class normally performs work on a cyclic basis, thus assuring regular attention to each boiler or other water container. In addition to actually testing and treating water, an employee in this class is responsible for instructing plant equipment operators, building service manager, and building service foremen in the proper procedures to apply in testing and treating boilers and other water containers in their assigned locations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the properties, characteristics, and uses of various chemicals used to test water content in boilers and other containers, and of those used in both preventive maintenance and repair of such containers. Ability to properly handle and apply chemicals to test and treat containers. Ability to keep detailed records related to services rendered. Ability to demonstrate to and instruct plant equipment operators and other responsible employees in the testing and treatment of water. Ability to evaluate damage to containers caused by water impurity or related problems and to make recommendations concerning repair need. Skill in the handling, mixing, and applying of chemicals common to this work. Good human relations and communications skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Completion of high school and considerable experience in chemically testing and treating water in boiler, water tower, and well water systems and/or similar water containers. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class C driver's license or equivalent. Class C Water Treatment Certificate preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to climb and carry out water testing/treating activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Periodically visits all school and central office locations.

2. Chemically tests water in boilers, water towers, well water systems and other water containers which are part of heating and central air conditioning systems, and treats impure water with chemicals to prevent or retard scale, rust, pitting, corrosion, and other damage.

3. Demonstrates to and instructs responsible building service personnel in the proper techniques and procedures to test and treat water containers in their assigned plants.

4. Maintains detailed records of all containers tested and treated, reflecting such information as date of test, impurity content of water, extent of container damage (if any), treatment rendered, and follow up necessary.

5. Submits to water treatment specialist¿s reports of damage requiring repair, and on the basis of observations recommends on the extent and urgency of consideration for repairs.

6. May replace filters, hoses, strainers, valves, and gaskets during routine maintenance visits.

7. Installs and repairs electrical equipment, such as Conductivity Water Treatment Controllers (monitors), Chemical Pumps, and Solenoid Valves.

8. Replaces filters for close loop system and repairs and/or replaces strainers on cooling tower racks as needed.

9. Tests close-loop system to ensure contractor has properly cleaned and rinsed systems before adding inhibitor.

10. Repairs or replaces PVC piping connected to cooling tower racks and all components related to the chemical pumps, including gaskets, hoses, injector valves, etc..

11. Replace gaskets on chemical and filter tanks as needed.

12. Makes treatment recommendations to the Division of Construction on new water systems based on already established DOC standards.

13. Visually inspects cooling tower racks and all equipment related to the water treatment systems and provides test data from new equipment before the contractor turns the equipment over to MCPS.

14. Performs other duties as needed or required.
