WORKING TITLE: Small Equipment Mechanic GRADE: 16 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs semiskilled and skilled work in the maintenance, adjustment, modification and repair of small and mid-sized gasoline, diesel and hydraulic equipment used in the maintenance and repair of MCPS grounds and facilities. Employees are also responsible for the ordering, stocking and inventory of parts. Work of this class is performed in the field or shop and requires an understanding of the principles of internal combustion engine in diesel, 2-cycle and 4-cycle forms and related systems as well as a working knowledge of hydraulic systems and components. Minor maintenance repair work is performed in the field while major adjustments and repairs are performed in the shop.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: MCPS written test required with the minimum required score achieved. Thorough knowledge of the principles of the internal combustion engine in diesel, 2-cycle and 4-cycle forms and related systems. A working knowledge of hydraulic systems and components. Understanding of the hazards involved in repairing and operating equipment and of safety procedures needed to minimize hazards. Ability to analyze malfunctions in equipment in order to make proper adjustments. Ability to assess the benefit of making repairs v. replacing equipment. Ability to communicate orally and in writing in order to instruct others in the operation equipment, to develop written operating and maintenance procedures, and to develop and write equipment specifications. Ability to order parts and maintain proper inventory levels and records. Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment involved in the maintenance and repair of equipment. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Mechanical training and experience in diesel and gasoline engine repair required. Employees are required to stay up-to-date with new technology such as new electronic ignitions and different fuel systems that are developed to meet federal or local regulations by attending vendor sponsored training sessions or through independent reading and studying. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland class D driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring movement and lifting of heavy objects and some physical exertion.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies. Required to wear personal protective equipment as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Dismantles, repairs, adjusts, rebuilds, and maintains a variety of diesel, hydraulic, 2-cycle and 4-cycle small and mid-size equipment used in maintaining grounds and facilities, including compact diesels, snow blowers, vacuums emergency generators, chain saws and other equipment.

Assesses equipment to identify design characteristics and other factors contributing to need for frequent repairs.

Overhauls magnetos and carburetors.

Repairs/rebuilds hydraulic pumps and hoses, drive shafts, power steering.

Makes major and minor tune-ups of equipment.

Sharpens and balances cutting blades and checks equipment before returning it to schools. Instructs building service personnel in the safe and proper use, operation, and maintenance of equipment and proper procedures for interchanging mower decks, snowplow, metal cutters and other tools used in the mechanic trade.

Delivers oil to schools and makes periodic checks and adjustments to equipment. power lawn and yard equipment.

Initiates purchase orders.

Maintains repair and maintenance records.

Maintains proper inventory levels and records.

Performs related work as required.
