Fire Safety Compliance Technician

WORKING TITLE: Fire Safety Compliance Technician GRADE: 14 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs responsible and varied work to ensure MCPS compliance with fire safety codes and regulations concerning fire safety and suppression equipment (i.e., fire extinguishers, kitchen hood suppression). Work includes but is not limited to: inspecting, repairing, servicing, and recharging equipment; overseeing the work of contractors performing installation, repair, and maintenance of equipment; coordinating work orders with contractors and other maintenance staff to repair or replace equipment and conducting follow-up inspections; coordinating and working with fire marshal¿s office, school, and maintenance staff to resolve code violations. May assist other division staff with inspection of fire alarms and sprinklers. The work requires knowledge of applicable fire safety codes and regulations and knowledge of maintenance and trades work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of fire safety codes and regulations applicable to a variety of equipment and systems found in public school systems (e.g., fire extinguishers, kitchen hood suppression, sprinkler). Sufficient knowledge of the maintenance, servicing, and repair of fire safety equipment to perform routine and emergency work as required. Knowledge of general maintenance practices and procedures and the use of hand and power tools and equipment. Ability to work with and communicate with others both inside and outside MCPS. Skill and ability to identify and resolve fire safety code violations. Ability to work independently and oversee the work of contractors. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Training and/or fire service extension classes required in fire prevention and safety, fire safety equipment operation, fire safety inspections, suppression systems (sprinkler), etc . Two years experience conducting fire safety inspections and servicing fire safety and suppression equipment. Other combinations of education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Non-Commercial Class C driver¿s license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Work requires walking for long periods of time and short periods of bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, and crawling. Work also requires lifting objects up to 50 lbs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conducts regular inspections and services equipment as needed (fire extinguishers, kitchen hood suppression systems) to ensure proper operation; notes when equipment was last inspected and the condition and type of the equipment during inspections; may replace/remove parts or equipment as necessary; tests equipment; installs fire extinguishers in school; performs repairs on equipment, replaces parts, and/or coordinates with contractor or other maintenance staff to handle as appropriate.

Serves as a point of contact with county fire marshal for inspections and code violations; reviews fire marshal reports for compliance; coordinates response to violation including communicating and follow-up with fire marshal, school and trades staff to resolve issues.

Monitors the work of contractors servicing fire safety and suppression equipment; reviews and accepts work of contractors before payment is approved; coordinates inspections with contractors and performs follow-up inspections as appropriate; assists in bid preparation and reviewing proposals.

Maintains records of equipment including location and dates of inspections, servicing, and installation; maintains and orders supplies for fire safety and suppression equipment.

Stays up-to-date on fire prevention safety standards and codes.

Performs other related work as assigned.
