EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Removes burned or damaged brick, tile, or other refractory and cleans surface of setting, using sledge, hammer, pry bar, scraper, and wire brush. 2. Lays firebrick and refractory tile to build, rebuild, reline, or patch boilers, furnaces, ovens, and similar heating equipment. 3. Cuts firebrick and refractories to size and shape determined by specifications, using circular abrasive or diamond-tipped saw. 4. Lays out and marks reference points to setting, using role, plumb bob, tape, level, and square. Calculates angles and courses for building walls, arches, columns, comers, and bottoms. 5. Mixes fire-clay mortar to specifications and spreads it with trowel, laying fire brick in place. Spreads or sprays refractories over exposed bricks to protect them against deterioration by heat. 6. Positions or bends special frame or hanger over casings to lay arches. 7. Cuts, notches, or drills openings to provide outlets, pyrometer mountings, brackets, and heating elements, using hand tools; to specifications, builds up and shapes cone around burner nozzle using special clay. 8. May supervise one or more general maintenance workers or heating service workers in performing nontechnical phases of work. 9. Performs related work as required.
