Service Writer/ Division of Maintenance

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, communicates with vehicle operators for repair information, and prepares and generates vehicle work orders. Completes assignments using own initiative to carry out regularly recurring assignments after becoming familiar with the work. Basic knowledge of Microsoft office computer programs (including: Word, Excel, & Outlook) two-way radios, telephones, scanners and similar office equipment. Ability to perform routine tasks in servicing automotive equipment with lubricants, accessories, and simple parts, as well as, routinely ordering parts for delivery for vehicles and equipment Ability to perform road calls for disabled vehicles, including towing vehicles and/or equipment. Ability to perform general shop clean up and basic pollution prevention tasks. Ability to order, monitor, track, receive, and issue parts and supplies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Completion of MCPS Skills Test at the required score and Drug test required. Knowledge of the operation of vehicles and other equipment. Working knowledge of the standard methods, tools, and equipment used in servicing automotive vehicles and equipment; some knowledge of the mechanical parts, fuel, and hydraulic systems of a variety of automotive vehicles and equipment. Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety and environmental precautions of the trade. Basic skills in the operation of Microsoft office computer programs and two-way radios. Ability to communicate effectively with others; Ability to maintain accurate records; Ability to check, verify and compile data; Ability to operate, or to learn to operate, the MAXIMO work order database; Ability to operate basic office equipment. Good oral and written communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Minimum one (1) year experience in: performing general clerical work and the servicing and maintenance of automotive vehicles and equipment. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland state commercial Class B driver's license. Must acquire and maintain a Maryland state Class A driver¿s license within 6 months of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Occasional sustained operation of keyboard devices and computer terminals. Must be able to lift and move heavy objects (50-100 pounds regularly) and to perform related manual labor.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies. Required to wear personal protective equipment as required and supplied by MCPS.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates computer to enter data and maintain computerized office or unit records, for example: enters vehicle repair information and generates work orders, issues order numbers and customer copies of work orders, creates schedules, and retrieves vehicle/equipment history data.

Maintains or creates reports in Excel, Word, or similar programs, as required.

Uses MS/Outlook regularly or email communication to MCPS staff, and vendors.

Completes minor repairs/mechanic work including but not limited to lubricating automobiles, equipment and trucks; filling gas tanks; servicing vehicles with oil and antifreeze; checking air pressure in tires; changing tires; charging batteries; making minor emergency repairs; and making shop repairs to damaged tires and other parts or equipment; replacing mufflers, tail pipes, hoses, light bulbs, windshield wipers and fan belts; steam cleaning engines; and applying stencils to vehicles and equipment.

Assists mechanic in body and fender repair and paint work; in the relining of brakes by pulling wheels, replacing grease seals and bleeding brake systems; and in tuning engines by replacing spark plugs and other components, cleaning air filters and adjusting carburetors.

Checks and verifies work order data, part numbers, hours worked, on work orders; vehicle component replacement records; vendor orders and/or invoices for accuracy etc..

Operates photocopy machine, paper cutter, and other office devices.

Receives work and sets controls to produce desired output.

Answers telephones, two-way radios, and takes messages; responds to inquiries regarding unit services; greets and directs visitors to appropriate staff.

Receives and issues parts, supplies, and tools.

Performs general shop clean up; such as sweeping garage floors and premises, cleaning and replacing tools and equipment; and basic pollution prevention tasks.

Telephones and arranges pickup and delivery of parts from outside vendors.

Contacts and advises vehicle operators using two-way radios.

Maintains computerized data by accessing database system; entering, verifying, updating and retrieving data.

Completes pickup and delivery of mowers and other equipment to schools and offices.

Answers road calls of disabled vehicles; may tow vehicles and/or equipment.

Performs related work as required.
