Automotive Technician I (Shift 1)

WORKING TITLE: Automotive Technician I (Shift 1) GRADE: 17 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs skilled and routine maintenance of buses, automobiles, trucks, tractors and other vehicular equipment. Independent judgment concerning work methods and procedures is required, but the work is subject to inspection during process and upon completion for quality and conformity with requirements. Supervision may be exercised over one or more assistants of a lesser grade.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Successful completion of MCPS Auto Mechanics written (knowledge) and hands-on skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required. Line automotive mechanic: Knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of truck, bus and automotive equipment. Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, and equipment of the truck, bus, and automotive mechanic trades; knowledge of the operation of internal combustion engines, ignition and of other systems; knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, on-board computer systems, air brake systems and automatic transmissions. Must have the ability to learn and operate technical test equipment and proper test procedures for individual systems. Ability to locate, diagnose, and repair malfunctions and to test repaired equipment. Ability to supervise assistants and to work effectively with others. Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in the automotive repair work. Knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of truck, bus, and automotive body repair equipment and working knowledge of the standard practices, tools, methods, and equipment used in the repair and painting of automotive bodies. Ability to diagnose structural defects, provide damage estimates, and make proper adjustments and body repairs to a wide variety of truck, bus, and automotive equipment. Ability to supervise assistants and work effectively with others. Considerable skill in the application of methods and techniques used in the truck, bus, and automotive body repair mechanic craft and in the use and care of pertinent tools, equipment, and facilities. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Four years experience in the field of automotive repair/or apprenticeship training program/ASE certification (i.e. heavy truck or school bus and electronics). Completion of MCPS courses in Communication Skills and Men and Women in the Work Force (or equivalent) highly desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland State noncommercial class C driver's license, or equivalent. Must possess and maintain or secure and maintain a Maryland State commercial Class A restricted drivers license or equivalent, with air brake, passenger/cargo and school bus endorsements within six (6) months of employment required. ASE Master test certification score preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Sufficient physical strength and stamina to lift objects up to 100 lbs; stand for extended periods of time, and complete work requiring considerable physical exertion. Exposure to inclement weather is possible.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Successful completion of MCPS Auto Mechanics written (knowledge) and hands-on skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required score. Possession of a complete set of truck, bus, and automotive mechanic tools appropriate for job assignment required. Ability to work overtime as required. May be required to attend training courses/programs in order to learn new automotive equipment and repair procedures, update skills, as needed. Mechanic in Division of Food & Nutrition Services: Successful completion of MCPS Refrigeration Mechanic written (knowledge) and hands-on skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required score.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

(Line Automotive Mechanic)

Performs general automotive repair work on buses, automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other vehicular equipment. Inspects, adjusts, and replaces/repairs necessary units and related parts as needed.

Repairs and diagnoses problems on cooling systems fuel and exhaust systems, diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, and a wide variety of electrical systems.

Completes front end alignments and repairs on steering and suspension systems.

Performs repairs on chassis units, brake systems, air and hydraulic, replaces clutches, standard and automatic transmissions, differential and steering units.

Road tests equipment to locate defects and to check repair work.

As directed, operates school bus or other automotive equipment.

Performs routine maintenance of shop equipment.

May be required to run road and service calls for disabled buses, maintenance trucks, etc.

Straightens repairs and/or replaces damaged bodies, doors, fenders, grills, bumpers, frames, cross members and other metal fixtures.

Cleans and prepares surfaces, applies fillers, mixes and blends paint as required, applies masking tape and primers, and paints vehicles.

Road tests equipment to locate defects and check repair work. As directed, operates school bus or other automotive equipment.

Understands and applies principles of performance evaluation and professional growth standards for employees.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
(Department of Food & Nutrition Services)

In addition to the above duties, the following duties apply for the mechanic who works in the Division Food and Nutrition Service (DFNS):

Adjusts, repairs, and installs replacement parts in domestic and commercial freezers, refrigerators, water coolers, and window air conditioners; read blueprints or schematic drawings to determine location, size, capacity, and type of components of unit.

Maintains warehouse and food handling equipment.

Observes and test functioning of components to determine need for replacement or repair; repairs or replaces defective parts and reassembles refrigeration units by bolting, soldering, brazing, and welding, using measuring instruments, hand tools, soldering iron, and welding torches; repairs or replaces electrical components of refrigeration equipment.

Drains oil and pumps gas from systems.

Cuts, bends, and brazes specified tubing to inlets and outlets of components to form liquid and control valves; removes air from system and changes system with specified amount and type of refrigerant;

Tests lines, components, and connections for leaks using various instruments and evaluates functioning and cooling capacity of system.

Records pressure and temperature readings from gauges during test run.

Compares readings with specification to evaluate performance of system and adjusts or replaces parts as indicated.

May adjust unit controls, as needed. Maintains equipment repair records on malfunctions and the steps take to repair the malfunction.

Documents replacement parts used to correct malfunction.

Understands and applies principles of performance evaluation and professional growth standards for employees.
