Automotive Technician II (Shift 1)

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of light, medium, large and heavy duty trucks and equipment, and serves as a working leader for a staff of automotive mechanics and service workers assigned on a regular basis to a vehicle shop facility. Maintains and repairs equipment such as, but not limited to, automobiles, varied of trucks, tractors, warehouse handling equipment, other motorized equipment. Provides leadership for a team of mechanics and helpers in providing direction on common work techniques, adjusting the work parameters, identifying parts and selecting tools to successfully complete the work. Enforcement of safety and security regulations while on the premises is also the responsibility of an employee in this class. Major additional duties include ordering) and properly securing repair parts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, repair, and maintenance of general and specialized hydraulic equipment; considerable knowledge of the operation of internal combustion engines, ignition, and other systems; considerable knowledge of the standard practices, tools, and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade; working knowledge of the practices and procedures of operating a service and repair garage, including parts ordering, inventorying, and record keeping. Ability to diagnose mechanical or structural problems, and to effectively adjust or repair a wide variety of automotive equipment; ability to plan, supervise, and inspect the work of an assigned staff of automotive mechanics and helpers; ability to make road tests and other checks both to determine problems and to determine effectiveness of repairs and adjustments; ability to make efficient use of labor and materials available at work location; ability to keep accurate records of work performed including , labor costs, materials and parts used; ability to identify, order, and store parts by stock number; ability to read and work from diagrams and wiring and hydraulic schematics; ability to work effectively with others. Skill in the care and use of shop tools and equipment. Good communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED required. Automotive Technical Certification and/ or Associates degree preferred. Considerable experience in the performance of a wide variety of increasingly responsible and skilled automotive mechanic work. Some supervisory/lead experience and training/course work in supervision desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: A Maryland Class A Commercial Drivers License is required at time of hire. ASE Master test certification desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Sufficient physical strength and stamina to lift objects up to 100 lbs; stand for extended periods of time, and complete work requiring considerable physical exertion. Exposure to inclement weather is possible.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Completion of MCPS Auto Mechanics Test at required score. Drug test required. Possession of a complete set of truck, and automotive mechanic tools appropriate for job assignment required. Ability to work overtime as required. May be required to attend training courses/programs in order to learn new automotive equipment and repair procedures, update skills, as needed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overhauls, repairs, adjusts, or replaces individual or component parts on a variety of trucks, automobiles, tractors, and other automotive equipment, including specialized hydraulic equipment, lift gates, valves, pistons, bearing assemblies, and cooling, feed, and exhaust systems; tunes motors, repairs and adjusts generators and starters, tests circuits and does diverse electrical work.

Performs required safety checks and repairs on equipment, as needed.

Estimates time and material needs; obtains price quotes.

Maintains records of job time and materials; maintains purchase records; reviews time records and verifies accuracy.

Evaluates work requests and discusses requests with users; recommends repairs, approval or disapproval.

Assists subordinates in determining such things as source of trouble, best method of repair, tools and parts needed to accomplish necessary work.

Assures continuous adherence to safety regulations.

Identifies parts by stock number, and enters this information on shop tickets together with hours of labor, cost, and description of work accomplished.

Orders repair parts, receives parts on delivery and secures them in storage area.

Secures building(s) and lot upon completion of work; unlocks lot and building(s) at start of shift, and observes for signs of theft, vandalism, unauthorized entry, or other security violation; reports any such findings to supervisor.

Maintains or supervises maintenance of inventory records for all parts and materials stored at or used by the repair facility.

Evaluates subordinates.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
