Transportation Dispatcher

WORKING TITLE: Transportation Dispatcher GRADE: 19 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general direction, manages the day-to-day operations of the dispatch team. Supervises the dispatch management team to include, recruiting, staffing, evaluating, developing and recognizing. Takes responsibility for overall team and individual team member performance. Coordinates all on-road operations for assigned depot each day.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the local street and road system. Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, and of the precautions necessary to avoid accidents. Knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, policies and guides that govern school transportation. Knowledge of bus route coordination and dispatching. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others and to effectively coordinate the completion of regularly assigned bus routes. Ability to instruct bus operators/attendants in the safe operation of buses and to implement safe driving practices and procedures. Ability to maintain records and complete reports. Ability to operate a school bus in the safe and efficient transportation of children. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED required. Experience as a school bus operator. Bus route dispatching, coordination, or supervision experience preferred. College courses in transportation, management, or other related field desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of or ability to obtain a Maryland Class B Commercial Driver¿s License (air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements), or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to handle stressful situations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Must be willing to work irregular hours during peak periods and emergencies. Must maintain certification as a Maryland school bus operator.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises radio bus operators, and provide next level supervision to bus operators and attendants not permanently assigned to routes.

Directs all bus service and other transportation activity ¿on the road¿ during assigned duty hours.

Assigns drivers and attendants to buses.

Dispatches buses in timely manner.

Minimizes service interruptions by managing available resources and responding quickly to unusual situations, i.e., emergencies, breakdowns, accidents, no shows, etc.

Ensures that all routes are covered.

Communicates with all stakeholders regarding daily operations including emergencies.

Maintains records and reports, i.e., filing of new updated runs, field trips, activity runs, bid system posting, report changes in buses in/out of service, tracking of spare buses for use, cleaning and fueling.

Ensures excellent service on field trips.

Keeps a daily log and prepares reports.

Responsible for preparing payroll data.

Communicates continuously with shop regarding the availability of equipment.

Assigns spare buses.

Distributes and tracks field trip tickets, special events, after school activities, etc.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
