WORKING TITLE: Operation Assistant, shift 3 GRADE: 14 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs responsible storekeeping work in the receipt, storage, issuance, and shipment o warehouse items to schools, maintenance shops, and offices. Provides technical guidance to lower level supply service workers and, where applicable, food service delivery workers. This class differs from that of supply service workers I and II in that it involves the inspection of incoming shipments and completed supply and food orders for accuracy and conformance with specifications and sanitation requirements. Nature of work also involves assisting the supervisor in training and providing guidance to warehouse personnel in the receipt, inspection, palletizing, storage, issuance, and delivery of supplies, food and related items, textbooks, furniture, equipment, and other items. The work requires a good knowledge of storekeeping, delivery, and sanitation procedures and familiarity with a wide variety of commodities stored or processed through a central warehouse facility.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of storekeeping and shipping methods and practices. Knowledge of storage requirements for supplies, food and related items, furniture, materials, equipment, and other commodities. Knowledge of sanitation requirements for food storage and delivery required for some positions. Ability to provide guidance and direction to lower level supply service workers. Ability to make complete and accurate checks of goods entering and leaving the warehouse. Ability to perform minor repairs on stock items. Ability to detect insect and rodent infestation required for food service positions. Ability to prepare accurate reports. Ability to read, write and make arithmetic computations at the level required by the position duties. Food service positions require the ability to calculate weights per cubic foot and dimensions in square and cubic feet. Skill in the operation of forklifts and other power industrial equipment and manual warehouse equipment. Skill in the operation of trucks weighing up to 46,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight. Skill in the operation of a computer terminal. Good human relations and communications skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Courses in warehouse and distribution management desirable. Experience as a Truck Driver Warehouse Worker or equivalent. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland class B commercial driver's license or equivalent, within three months of employment. Completion of an OSHA approved certification program in the operation of power industrial equipment. Food service positions require the ability to obtain certification in sanitation by the State of Maryland.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to move heavy items weighing up to 100 lbs. and to perform work requiring sustained moderate physical effort. Ability to work in zero degree temperatures for considerable periods of time required for food service positions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work overtime, including weekends.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Receives and assigns shipping lists to warehouse workers; pulls supplies requested from stock; checks quantity and description of items prior to shipping-, assists in the pulling, packing, and delivery of shipments to schools and offices.
Arranges for the daily inventory of all discrepancies found.
Maintains and analyzes warehouse workers' production records.
Assigns staff and equipment required to unload inbound truck and rail shipments in order to avoid demurrage charges. Inspects inbound trucks and rail cars for proper sanitary and temperature requirements.
Inspects incoming shipments against purchase orders to determine correctness of quantity, quality and commodity description; inspects received items for proper pull dates and temperatures;
maintains records on stock items and distribution of materials; ensures that received unit loads are in compliance with weight and load center restrictions of forklift and pallet rack; keeps supervisor informed of any possible problems.
Receives and checks returned school or office items; determines those needing maintenance and accomplishes repairs o a minor nature such as cleaning, varnishing of surfaces, and replacing of worn parts; culls stock to determine items fit for reissue; segregates, tags, and stores units designated for scrap, sale or return to vendor.
Oversees the storing of warehouse items with sufficient stock to expedite the filling of orders; ensures proper rotation o stock; may instruct service workers in the proper methods of moving, palletizing, and shelving goods and in maintaining the warehouse facilities in a sanitary, neat and orderly fashion.
Inspects incoming, stored and outgoing food product for rodent and/or insect infestation. Isolates suspect product and makes arrangements for proper treatment.
Complies with all federal, state and local health requirements.
Inspects material handling equipment for proper operation.
Uses computer terminal to input product information and delivery requests.
Operates delivery vehicle weighing up to 46,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight as required.
Performs related work as required.
