Transportation Routing Specialist

OFFICIAL TITLE: Transportation Router CODE: 9420 SQ/OQ: Optimal Qualified
WORKING TITLE: Transportation Routing Specialist GRADE: 16 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION; PHYSICAL DEMANDS; AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Summary Description: Under general supervision, plans school bus routes and maintains information concerning routes and stop locations for regular education students and for special education/needs students. The work of this position also involves: maintaining data in the computer assisted routing software to include routes, equipment, employee and student information; taking corrective action on bus routes and seeking assistance from the Regional Router for special circumstances. Physical Demands: Position requires operation of keyboard device and pointing device for extended periods. Special Requirements: Considerable overtime required during Summer and other peak periods.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the local street and road system. General routing strategies; knowledge of Windows operating system and Microsoft Office software. Ability to utilize computer assisted routing software. Ability to plan and implement efficient routes. Ability to pass the MCPS DOT Routing Skills Assessment. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Education Training Experience:High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. Training and/or experience in computer operations or networked personal computers. Experience as a successful bus operator or attendant and experience with computerized database applications and transportation policies and procedures desired. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:Possession of a valid Maryland State Noncommercial Class C driver^s license (or equivalent).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Example Duties:1. Develops bus routes, verifies information, and ensures communication and coordination of operators^ schedules. 2. Understands and follows MCPS policies, safety guidelines, and DOT procedures related to routing. 3. Reviews location of students, length of ride, and special needs of students. 4. Receives placement notifications and implements necessary changes in routes. 5. Maintains understanding of assigned schools and programs and may participate in site visits, route reviews, and/or program meetings as directed by supervisory staff. 6. May handle miscellaneous activities related to routing as directed by the Regional Router. 7. Completes routine and recommends unusual adjustments in routes to the Regional Routers for action. 8. Performs related work as required.
