Transportation Fueling Assistant

WORKING TITLE: Transportation Fueling Assistant GRADE: 08 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the direction of the automotive repair supervisor, this position is responsible for assisting operators with checking fluid levels, adding fluids, and fueling of MCPS school buses and other vehicles. It is also responsible for maintaining oil inventory, fueling equipment and ensuring adequate maintenance supplies are available at fueling station. Performs routine tasks in servicing automotive equipment, sweeping, replacing simple parts on fuel dispensers, delivering and pick up of vehicles, parts runner, and reports problems associated with MCPS vehicles. Maintains the depot fuel island. Sticks fuel tanks, checks veeder root readings, oil issuing slips, and prepares limited fuel reports. Coordinates fuel orders with the repair supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the standard practices and equipment used for automotive fueling, General knowledge of the operating principles, mechanical parts, fuel systems, and hydraulic systems for a variety of vehicles. Ability to learn storm management techniques and implement safety practices to contain potential occupational and environmental hazards. Working knowledge of the practices and procedures of operating a fuel island including the proper containment of hazardous liquids. Ability to fill out fuel site inspection reports. Ability to regulate fuel dispensing, control spills and provide inventory control. Ability to implement good customer service practices when interacting with vehicle operators. Ability to follow directions. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required One year experience in the automotive field, such as fueling, servicing, and performing simple vehicle maintenance. Training or the ability to attend training offered by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) to ensure property safety and reporting procedures are instituted. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of or ability to secure within 6 months, a valid Maryland CDL, Class B with passenger, school bus, and air brake endorsements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Sufficient physical strength and stamina to lift objects up to 100 lbs.; stand for extended periods of time, and complete work requiring considerable physical exertion. Exposure to inclement weather possible.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Drug test required. Ability to respond to emergency calls anytime, to work overtime

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist in fueling buses, trucks, and automobiles.
Services vehicles with oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze, and windshield washer fluid.
Perform weekly inventory maintaining adequate supplies of oil, paper towels, anti-freeze, windshield washer solvents, product containment vessels, etc.
Inspect fuel stations, fuel wells, dispenser pans, hoses, veeder root, lids, painted areas, etc.
Maintain proper disposal procedures mandated by Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) for containing spills and storing hazmat material.
Inspect vehicles for leaks, low tire pressure, body damage, etc and report to the bus operators.
Fill out weekly fuel site reports on status of the wells, dispenser, and etc.
Observe bus drivers servicing actions and provide guidance and assistance as needed.
Regulates fuel usage, controls spills and monitors island inventories.
Checks electronic fuel systems printouts.
Perform daily tank readings while calculating conversion from inches to gallons for diesel, gasoline, and waste oil. Monitor and report any storage tank abnormalities.
Attend employee in-service training.
Maintain a safe, clean work environment (i.e. sweep fuel island, shovel snow, remove ice, pick up trash, provide washing materials, replace fuel nozzles, report fuel dispenser problems to the shop repair supervisor, etc.).
Performs related duties as required.
