In spring 2004 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students in Grades 4, 6, and 7 took the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) in reading and mathematics for the first time. Across the district, high percentages of students in these grades achieved at or above proficiency, while surpassing their Maryland peers in all grades and assessed areas. More than 80% of Grade 4 students demonstrated proficiency in both content areas, while about the same percentage of students in Grades 6 and 7 achieved this level in reading. Overall, more than 60% of students in all three grades achieved proficiency in both content areas.
